Even Ocelot of all people was very bland.
The game is amazing until after you rescue Miller.

The gameplay is great by itself, but overall the game gets too repetetive and basebuilding is a chore.

It's solid but kind of disappointing compared to the rest of the series.

I guess it's not nearly as bad if you weren't following the hype. Kojima kept building it up as the story of how Big Boss became a demon, which was just not true. To make it worse the trailers had almost every cut scene in the game, which kind of implied there was a lot more. Both environments too, which led to the same problem. They even put stuff like Peacewalker and Paz in the trailer to generate speculation when they were actually not important at all. To top it all off, the twist was figured out immediately after Ground Zeroes came out and everyone just hoped that wasn't actually it for the next year. Kojima actually had Keifer voice the medic in GZ with just slight voice modulation. Even before GZ came out a body swap in general was a popular theory, pic related.

Game is literally unfinished.

The plot twist serves to only wrap up a considerably small plothole in the NES games, while severely damaging Big Boss' character. Big Boss goes from war hero to conniving and backstabbing conspirator.

Ocelot is very out of character.

Trailers strongly depicted a "fall" in which Big Boss would become a despicable villain, which never occurred.

Quiet is a terrible character that had way too much of the game dedicated to her.

After completing them all back to back I had this huge empty feeling, like returning from a long journey just to realize that my home isn't where I really want to be.

Figuring out the optimal route for the S rank and Fox emblem in the missions was fun, then that at some point the game just abruptly makes you through extreme missions to unlock the rest of the game and the alternative mission 1 is the ending, still the kikongo outbreak and the final endgame tapes were really good, shame that the game just ends.

I actually like V a lot but it failed on a couple of different marks
The game COULD have been a 10/10 masterpiece but was rushed was badly that it left me wanting more even after 100%ing it.
I have no problems with Venom at all, I think he's an amazingly complex character that most people don't understand because they were itching to play as Big Boss, who is extremely different personality wise

I personally really liked the Venom twist, and what it meant for MG1. Also, because I found the controls to be so good, and it was satisfying to play the game, I very much enjoyed the moment-to-moment stealth gameplay in Phantom Pain more than in any previous MGS.
