I'd argue that +atk is better than +spd though.

Having -spd however is pretty bad when defending against other green mages, but on attack she isn't doubling anyone anyway, so it's better to have as much attack as possible to OHKO.

Mine is -spd/+red, which fucking sucks when I try to one shot Effie and she gets away with 3 HP, that +atk would make a world of difference, +spd though? not so much.

The permadeath is probably just for the mode. It's sort of a ladder mode where you keep climbing tiers and facing tougher opponents the farther you get. The permadeath aspect is probably just when you lose a unit you cannot use him for the rest of the run, he will still be available for arena, training and other modes
