I just started it up again the other day, noticed my longest playthrough was over 24 hours, most others around 13. While it didn't have EVERYTHING it was supposed to have, I can agree, it's the best RPG ever made.

All RPGs have always been power grind treadmills where the only appealing aspect is upgrading or becoming more powerful.

That's why when you become a literal god in any RPG the fun drops like a rock.

Skyrim tried to lean away from the power creep but these types of games don't work without their flawed system of gaining power without end.

There's no location in W3 with the same density of complex quests and secrets as Khorinis. It may have more stuff to do overall, but I'd rather have my butter laid thick. Also, Witcher devs cocksucked Gothic and cited it as one their main inspirations.

well said and even though long-form RPGs were my favorite genre growing up I now pretty much see them as the pointless thing they are.
For me though, there's still enjoyment to be had in stat/power-mongering with roguelikes and roguelites. Binding of issac was damn good for one thing. I sure wish they make games like that one which aren't the ones they've made

i played it, i think i've played it like 3-4 times now, honestly it's great about 2/3 and the last third is just mediocre.
comparing that to lets say rpg's of the last 10 years (ie 1/3 is mediocre, 2/3 is complete shit) it is is pretty amazing.
i am aware of the problems of the combat (let's face it, combat was the main issue) but since i don't really give a fuck about that, then it won't take away from the value of the game.

I played Gothic in 2016 after Morrowind (in 2015), and holy shit, the game was amazing.

Sure the controls were very hard to get into, but after a few hours it became second nature. A shame Gothic II had some performance issues in my computer, otherwise I would have definitely given it a full ride.

Sure. But it's easier for me to explain WHY it's so different to Morrowind, which may scare you away:

- Morrowind is easily a 200+ hours game. Gothic is around 50 hours a playthrough, and that's been generous.
- In Gothic, the world is carefully pieced together. Every NPC is either unique, or has nothing to say. In Morrowind, NPCs are either "unique", or are Wikipedia-style dispensers that just clutter the game world, as you cannot be sure what kind of NPC it is until you exhaust its topics.
- Gothic's combat is far more interesting, challenging and engaging. Every creature requires different skills and approaches.
- Progression is very satisfying. Unlike in Morrowind, equipment makes a big difference in Gothic. Going from one tier to the next is literally the difference between "I can't do this" and "I'm handing that monster its ass".
- All quests are cool and fun.
- The gameworld is smaller by a considerable size, then again, all of it is hand placed as opposed to the "just fill this house with stuff, bro" style of Morrowind, where houses are virtually undistinguishable from each other, despite the amount of shit there is in them.
- It's immersive as fuck. Everything in it contributes to actual immersion as opposed to "read the books" immersion from Morrowind.

I would say "keep playing until you get used to the controls", because that's when Gothic becomes so much more fun.

Gothic 1 isn't great. It's a cool little RPG with a very unique atmosphere (you play as a convict thrown in a penal colony surrounded by a magical dome, which overtime grew it's own societies), insteresting storyline and likeable characters. It also gets very easy very fast.
Gothic 2 is one of the best open world games ever. The overworld is still quite small, but it's all handcrafted and natural, no part of it feels like like it was just slapped in to have an excuse for monster encounters. Almost every quest can be done in 4-5 different ways, the game ever acknowledges and rewards you with XP for sequence breaking. It's very replayable and also very hard, fucking buy it nigger.

What? The game is amazing on a second playthrough because you are already used to the controls, so that problem is out of the way. It's pretty much like Dark Souls in that sense: hard to get used to it, and because it takes a while before you do get used to, the game isn't as fun in the beginning.
