Paper Mario's plot was very straight forward. Original was literally just the plot to every other Mario game that's generally regarded as not having plot, with Bowser kidnapping the princess without any twist. Haven't finished Thousand Year Door, but if it's really just about the potential release of a sealed demon I'm not sure why anyone praises its plot. Super Mario RPG was about a threat from a parallel world invading the Mushroom Kingdom, forcing Bowser and Mario to team up with what is basically an angel.

Biggest challenges I've faced in Mario RPGs were against Croco, Smithy, and Culex. Aesthetically the best, especially for an SNES game. I could never get into the paper look of the later RPGs.

Not him but the appeal for PM64 when it comes to any form of plot for me was that each Chapter had their own interesting mini-stories with fun characters. For example Chapter 3 has a Boo named Bow keeping the Star Spirit captive from you since Tubba Blubba is eating her fellow ghosts since he's literally invincible, it's up to Mario to figure out how to make him vulnerable, find out what's in the Windmill and storm his Fortress in Gusty Gulch.

Another thing is you at least see Bowser, Peach & Twink in between Chapters to find out what they're up to, it has good jokes and you see Peach trying to help Mario even though she's in space with Twink.

Like all of these don't make an interesting overall plot but it makes the game have fun & interesting segments. The same goes for TTYD but I do enjoy the overall plot with Grodus, X-nauts, Peach & TEC since it's not just a generic Bowser kidnaps Peach plot and that's all I really want from a Mario RPG.

It was good as a kid's introduction to RPGs, but it's pretty lacking as an adult. At least that was my experience with it.

Characters in 64 have much utility than in TTYD. Even though Watt is the only OP character, she just has 1 attack that constantly does 5 damage at max, an attack boosting move, and 2 shitty paralysis moves. Vivian can burn opponents, an attack that hits everything, a confusion move, AND can hide you from powerful attacks. There's literally no reason to use her since all the others fail in comparison.

I wouldn't go as far as saying it sucks, but it is a fairly forgettable, but competent RPG experience. My problem is that this game doesn't really excel in any one area. Everything is just sort of bland...the entire Mushroom Kingdom is just a checklist of typical RPG locations.
