I don't get that, 0 attempted to be the original and fell short in every facet. They only needed to do two things to make it a better game in my eyes.
1. have okabe grow more attached to amadeus till and abandon trying to save kurisu
2. have okabe grow more attached to amadeus, but have a complete and total mental breakdown when he reminds himself she is nothing more than a ghost of the woman he loved
3. create a non-canon route where beta okabe snaps out of it, turns back into huouin and goes back in time himself and reunites with his waifu

Probably what you've heard is that the pacing is shit, which it isn't. People dislike Root Double because the A route starts off really fast and keeps that pace going the entire time, then B is slower by comparison so it seems like the pacing has taken a nosedive when in actuality it's still totally fine. There's also another instance of slower pacing later, but if you enjoy the story you probably won't mind it. Personally, I think the weakest part of RD is its music and not anything else.

Anybody played The Fruit of Grisaia and it's sequels? They're pretty good and incredibly comfy.

Don't even bother reading Visual Novels unless you're trying to learn Japanese. I've been using them to learn Japanese over the past 2 years, and though they work great as a reading tool, they're fucking awful. 90% is poorly written garbage, and the 10% that isn't shit at the beginning usually has an autistic plot-twist or tone shift that ruins the whole game.
The perfect example is Little Busters! (The game in the OP) very fun game with enjoyable characters, but the second you actually choose a route to go down, the writing takes a nosedive and you realize the characters have no depth.

Katawa Shoujo. It's the perfect introductory VN. It's genuinely really good, it's not overly weeb or anything like that, no supernatural bullshit that might turn you off. It's just a plain, down to earth vanilla VN with a typical, but not faceless/completely forgettable protagonist that's relatable. You don't get spoiled with voice acting which could turn you into a baby who won't play anything w/o VA's, and avoids the risk of playing something with VA's you might end up disliking. It has a few choices to make, but just enough to feel like you're making some decisions, and is fairly lenient with fail states. Also replayability with multiple routes.

Best or all, it's 100% English natively and completely free. No patches, no torrents, no Japanese. Perfect starting point.

It's been so long since a twist genuinely caught me off guard.

More a VN crossed with a Strategy Game but I really enjoyed Aselia the Eternal. The art isn't great it has to be said but it's a fun epic scale fantasy with good characters and story, and a good length. I've not tried the sequel, but I've heard it has better gameplay and worse story overall.
