Why did graphics just stop improving?
>>
Ego did literally nothing wrong.
>>
/v/ said graphics didnt matter, so the devs stopped caring.
>>
Because while hardware can continue to improve, artists modeling and texturing stuff won't.
>>
I'm pretty sure a single frame of that takes hours to render.
>>
>>376824135
What? That's just a photo of a raccoon.
>>
>>376824249
Pretty much this. All those games that were on the 6th gen that had insanely high quality art styles have all either retired or moved to other industries.

With how it is now you won't find high detailed games ever again. The skill requirement takes too long and the production takes even longer.
>>
Because hardware can't render that in real time
>>
It's not about technology. We already have the necessary knowledge to do so but AAAs don't want to take that gamble since :

- Astronomical production costs.
- Limitting your market to ultra-high end rigs ( and those won't achieve smooth framerates either).

There's absolutely no profit in doing so at the moment.
>>
>>376824229

He literally gave someone cancer
>>
>>376824135

Because they started focusing on pushing ridiculously unnecessary resolutions like 4K when their hardware isn't ready. Instead of focusing on making their games look amazing at 1080.

This, but obviously not that good of a quality. It would be impossible to turn a profit considering the development costs would be massive and very few people would be able to run it on their machines

How the fuck did Marvel films about characters who were never pop culturally relevant manage to be better than the last two Star Wars films?
>>
>>376824135
The main APIs developers use for development are made for consoles (Direct3D) or phones (Metal) and update only when the capabilities of that hardware increases.

If developers would start using the Vulkan graphics API which was made for the PC, and advances as PC hardware advances we would no longer see discrete 'generations' of games and instead more rapid incremental improvements over time.
>>
>>376824135
That's a fucking nightmare to render, besides is there a pixar movie that moves fluid and looks as good as a video game?

Resolutions have progressed faster, and subsequently demand far more from the declining rate of hardware improvements to drive it.

Before, resolutions not only hardly changed, but also increased by small amounts. Now we're seeing like 75% and higher changes.

4. Entire games made with Unreal Engines default materials, or materials made to be 1:1 copies

it actually looks like it could be from a video game, but i think that games have a lot more going on than movies, there's some really complex physics calculations, lots of different scripts it's full of all kinds of stuff while movies are pretty much an image that gets drawn to screen.
>>

>>
>video games will never look like this in your lifetime

>Why did graphics just stop improving?

Because it's harder to render graphics in real time than it is spending days, maybe weeks, rendering a movie.
>>
>>376824135
Massive diminishing returns after the last generation.

Games look as good as they really ever need to. What they need to do is look that good, run smoothly, and play well.
>>
>>376825747
I lost interest once they called rocket a trash panda.
Fuck off, if you can't make up your own jokes then don't say one.
>>
>>376825587
They have declined in the gains. It's advancing, but at smaller margins. GPUs are doing alright, still seeing 25-50% gains in a new series, but CPUs are at best a 5-10% gain. Admittedly part of it deals with the lack of optimization on multiple cores, but nevertheless it's still a small bit of growth.
>>
>>376824969
because before the new trilogy they offered us the prequel films and expecting them to do better this time was a mistake

>>
>>376824135
>Why did graphics just stop improving?
Consumers are starting(finally) to realize that devs can't make games with better graphics without completely sacrificing functionality.
>>
>>376825427
>1. Flat edge cartoon style
If you mean cell shading like Zelda Wind Walker and Jet Set Radio Future, this art style is GOAT and works more often than not in creating an awesome atmosphere.
>2. World of Warcraft light art styles
At least it's something. It has an art style, it's not trying to be anything more than it is
>3. Uncanny valley realism
The worst. Games trying to look close to reality is fine but pushing the uncanny valley is just stupid and almost never works.
>4. Entire games made with Unreal Engines default materials, or materials made to be 1:1 copies
I've only seen this with mods or independent development and I'm okay with that

I think 3 is necessary for when we break through the uncanny valley but pushing emotional games with close-ups of sad faces and shit on players at the moment is stupid as fuck because it's rarely animated well enough to work.

They have? I played the original bioshock 2 recently and it looked absolutely disgusting, with terrible resolution issues and everything. And I know it's not an especially ugly game for the time.
>>376824249
While it's not a linear advancement since art is a skill that has to be relearned for each new person, there can definitely be a improvement in overall art. And not even just because budgets and total artist manhours increase, skills can be developed and tastes can change, or caveman art would look the same as renaissance painting.
>>
>>376824683
>when their hardware isn't ready
Just like they did last gen with 1080p. Resolutions are easy buzzwords to sell your game with.
>>
>>376827401
Graphics have stagnated, but that's due to the jump in generations being not very impressive this time. Maybe next gen we'll see big strides and improvements.
>>

It's good to be hopeful, but most devs still can't work with previous gen tech. This is like giving a rocket to a retard and calling him an astronaut.

This movie was pretty entertaining, but a lot of people told me it was the better than the first and when I watched it it wasn't like that at all. It barely has any substance and the plot is really drawn out, you could have done the movie an hour long and you wouldn't tell the difference. As always with Marvel movies, Ego is a terrible villain with really questionable motivations that don't make sense. And the top it off the movie is absolutely inconsequential to the infinity arc, which is very disappointing because the first one was very important to the overall arc and introduced a shit ton of characters that should play a role in Infinity War.

All in all 7/10 first one was better.

This, and I also think the boom of the indie market that brought games like super meat boy and braid, to the spotlight, games that because they had limited resources had to cut in the graphics department, these games showed the AAA studios that people are not very much concerned with the graphics part of the game.

>>
Graphics in videogames still capacity to improve and always have, but videogames are pushing the limits of profitability and having everything look as good as it could has become too expensive to be profitable since the 7th gen.

Comparing the visual fidelity of CGI in film to video games isn't a fair comparison to make. You'd have movies looking just as shit as ME:A if they had to render everything in real time in the theater and were budgeted with the expectation of only making like like 200k ticket sales for the average movie.
>>
>>376829647
What? Ronan at least had more legitimate reasons for what he was doing.

You can have the most lifelike graphics imaginable, but it means absolutely nothing if those graphics aren't supported by good writing and excellent level design and the attention to detail required to make the world within the game feel real as well. Even if graphics in games continue to evolve and advance, if gameplay and writing continues to degrade as it has over the past decade it will all be worthless in the end.

The thing about /tv/ is that moreso than any board, they want to be the biggest contrarian cunts out there.

At first, /tv/ shit on Batman v Superman just like everyone else, but then the hate became so mainstream, they started to pretend BVS isn't a huge piece of shit. And now they've been doing it for so long, that a good chunk of those falseflaggers genuinely defend it.

It's like when you tell a lie for so long, you eventually think its true.

They should be, otherwise Thanos needs to win because there's no way all the lightweights that form the Avengers can beat him. Even if the GotG join in it would be shitty if Thanos didn't win, since the only characters that legitimately have a chance at beating him aren't Marvel property (Galactus) or are already confirmed to not appear (Adam Warlock).

Chances are Thanos never actually gets to assemble the gauntlet, so it's shit already.

The hammer guy was just a big angry evil race hammer leader CGI guy.

Ego was a suave motherfucker Kurt Russel living planet. Yeah, "I want to own the Universe" isn't the most exciting goal, but the execution was way above GotG.

>they are all more or less crap
They vary wildly in quality and the GotG movies, which we're talking about here, are very competent and good standalone action comedy Sci-Fi flicks. Ironically, one of the things that makes them so good is that they're far away from Earth where the general MCU plotlines takes place, they're just about having wacky fun in a colorful (literally and figuratively) galaxy. Instead of, you know, a bunch of guys in tights charging each other on a grey concrete airfield.

Haha. Bullshit.

There's whole programs made which puts automates the texturing in otherwise low-poly models, and there's even programs which auto-increase a 2000 poly model into a literally million poly model with the press of a button.

That games won't be able to handle that many polys YET without slowing down is an entirely different problem.

While I understand your argument, it's not entirely true.

Textures have come very far in just how good computers have become at generating them, of course it still takes a person to apply it well- but the process has been very well streamlined

Creating a (number)k texture now isn't more difficult or time consuming than it was to make a 128x128 years ago, it's actually easier and faster by a mile.

And photogrammatry is showing to be quite promising for models, I guess.

>>
>>376832474

3D animator here, you are retarded.

Polygon subdivision/tessellation has existed for decades, it's absolutely nothing new and every 3D modeler in the world is familiar with it. It's not a fucking magic button - it doesn't add detail or take intended topology into consideration, all it does is smooth the entire model indiscriminately. Works great for stuff like cars or trees or soft pixar characters or anything with smooth curves, not so much for most character design or anything with sharp corners and edges.

And automated texturing? Hilarious. You can "automate" textures that are procedural, sure, but literally anything that needs actual non-randomized features on it, which is nine out of ten models, has to be not only custom textured but also unwrappped for texturing beforehand, which can be a lot of work.

Tools are made all the time that make these things simpler, but most of them are proprietary and can't be bought anywhere, and none of them do everything for you like you claim.

But just look at the buildings that used to be built in the past versus the buildings that are built today. Even by rich people.

The truth of the matter is that we can do so much, much better. But no one on the planet is willing to invest since it's not necessary to go that far.
>>
That's because production costs everywhere are seeing a dramatic increase.

And that's because basically, the details are soooo tiny and the simulations soooo huge, it takes humans forever to craft a single scene.

And the only way to lower this is to, once again, eliminate the human part of the equation and use artificial intelligences.

I believe that soon there will be an explosion of graphics quality and quantity that, coupled with dramatically cheaper monitor technology (because again, a.i.), will not only make the OP level image quality viable in fluid realtime/~120hz+ for end consumers, but even true World-Simulation/The Matrix level quality viable.

So I'd say just wait and Invest into artificial intelligence.

> Modeling and texturing dont changed in 20 years
Spoken like someone who hasn't touched any modelling or texturing programs.

Most models nowadays are produced using scultping techniques where you take a large block and chip away, rather than building a model up from shapes that become more and more complex.

Plus tools like Substance Painter use advanced algorithms to simulate the effect of wind, rust, aging, flame and so forth for turning flat textures into complex surfaces with normal maps, bump maps, and specular maps that would have all been done by hand in the past, but nowadays just requires moving some sliders. It's still time-consuming, especially if a studio has to use a Technical Artist to make all the shaders that something like SP uses, but the methods haven't got dramatically more time-consuming, they've simply changed.

I'd seriously recommend trying out Zbrush, Substance Painter and Maya so you can see just how easy it is these days to produce decent quality work, and then remember that 15 years ago pic related was the pinnacle of high quality professional modelling and took the same amount of time to make as a modern game protagonist.

Is Rocket the best husbando in existence?
>>
>>376824135
Because increases in resolution have been taking up the vast majority of graphical horsepower improvements.

This. Comparing high budget American CGI movies to games is dumb as fuck. These movies are rendered using some powerful server farms and even then, they can take hours to days to render completely. Current home PCs are nowhere near that computationally capable.
>>
Why do I need my games to look like that?
I'm not a furfag.

No, but he is the best raccoon in the galaxy.

Is it? That's a disappointment.

i hate how only the movie even made him popular

To be fair the California version sucked ass compared to the original. Still feels lazy though.

because, you know how long it takes to render just a single frame of an animated movie?

as long as you liked him before the first movie made him popular i don't care
but the faggots who try and say they liked him despite not giving two fucks about him before the first movie bother the fuck out of me

Thank fucking god, tower of terror is a fucking classic, getting rid of it would be equal to getting rid of fucking space mountain (Honestly, space mountain would've been a much better candidate to reskin as a Guardians ride).

It's not just Bendis who pulls that shit with Thanos Imperative, though.
Every last writer at Marvel who's referenced it displays how they couldn't even bothered to check a wiki article on it.

I was under the impression that it was a new ride, that's all. Surely Didney Worl makes enough money to build and expand for more rides, right?

I like Rocket and had absolutely no interest in Mahvel comic stuff before the movies, nor do I pretend otherwise.

They're also not rendering in real time, Genius.
They can have as much detail as they want at any framerate they want.
>>
>>376847105

Yes, Disneyland actually has an excuse since they barely have any land left to build new stuff.

Disney world has so much unused land they can build whatever. There's a lot of weird legal barriers though that restrict the Florida park from using Marvel though thanks to Universal. Which is probably why they're building a Star Wars land instead.

>Graphics have stagnated
Compare a 2016 or 2017 game to a 2013 game. They haven't stagnated.
>>
>>376824969
Trick question, they're all garbage.

Only good Marvel movies are Iron Man and Incredible Hulk. Technically, you can count a good chunk of X-Men movies as well.
>>
>>376836531
unfortunately as an animator slave you have little technical knowledge and no awareness of technical advancements made in that field all the time. it seems you have no knowledge what makes up the actual bulk of the work in game related modeling, texturing and animation work either.

since you mention procedural generation, machine learning is already starting to give us tools where we can create almost any kind of texture we want by feeding some algorithm photos as input and touching it up a little. this already will reduce real world texturing workloads in games by 90%+, because you don't need an artist to manually draw the wood texture of a chair, or brick wall textures.

procedural animation has so many papers coming out every year that many low level animator slaves like you will probably be out of a job completely in the near future. you don't need a great artist or actor to animate when a non-essential character speaks, walks around, reaches for something, etc.
>>
>>376824135
The fact that you want better graphics instead of better games depresses me.
>>
honestly nigga look at the advances in lighting and shading and shit, all that shit looks so much better now
>>
>>376829432
Yes, and apparently it quite common.

I don't go to the movies very often, but I went to go see Logan when it came out at the beginning of March. The audience was bawling like a bunch of bitches at the end, and when the credit roll began, half the room stood up and applauded.

It was so fucking surreal.
