But how is arrow to the knee even mildly humorous? Cake is a lie is a joke in the game so I can understand that now, but arrow to the knee is only 'humorous' because it's a meme. But how did it become a meme in the first place if it isn't inherently funny by itself?

Cake is a lie is LE EPIC RANDOM to people who don't know the context and is still humourous to people who haven't played Portal. Arrow in the knee was funny for the first day or so, I still remember /v/ having multiple threads of it on release day for Skyrim. As with all semi-funny jokes Reddit and 9gag put them on a fucking pedestal and lauded it as the true pinnacle of comedy and because it's very easy to subsitute "I DID X UNTIL ARROW KNEE xD" it spread like wildfire until it became absolute cancer and died after the second day. Then they continued making the jokes for another year or so.

Yeah and I heard that way more than the arrow to the knee line. Though, I didn't play the game at launch so maybe the patched it to have less frequency? Regardless, I heard that mage say the hoshtilities line way more than I heard the arrow to the knee.
