Nintendo : Literally saved the entire gaming industry one time, has a pedigree of highly acclaimed first party games spanning several generations, platforms and genres. Has the highest selling handheld of all time. Took various risks to use tech to innovate gaming experiences. Pedigree of the best line of dedicated handheld gaming devices in gaming history.
Sony : Revolutionized the industry with CD-rom with 3D graphics technology on console, has a pedigree of highly acclaimed first party games spanning several generations, platforms and genres. Has the highest selling console of all time. The most experimental first party software developers and a unwavering comitment to delivering the most robust and variety fresh console line up in console gaming history.
Xbox : Invented paid online. Invented timed/superficial game exclusivity and the practice of DLC and Season Pass. Pulled out from PC gaming to focus on locking PC out of content to focus on Xbox. Killed Ensemble Studios. Has never once been successful in the console business. Used Japanese developers as a stepping stone to establish their platform then threw them under the bus once they thought they were ahead. Has the least amount of first party games in gaming history, the least acclaimed games in gaming history and currently has the least amount of games and the least variety of games on their consoles in gaming history. Literally admitted in an inteview that their focus will be on free to play multiplayer shovelware games as they cancel all their single player experiences

Microsoft set the precedent and showed that companies could get away with pulling that shit, so of course they'd join in to get the extra money. Even Nintendo is starting to stoop to their level with this supposed paid online system they're working on.
