As for Diablo games, I couldn't tell you why you do that, but for MMOs I know why I do. It's because in between every story quest there's a hundred other little bullshit fuck quests with quest text like, "Hey man, my wife fucked up and lost our [Carrot] harvest, can you go out into that field right next to us, that we own, and pick 8 [Carrot] for us?". You get so used to skipping that shit, that by the time the story quests come back you're conditioned into skipping right into it and just getting shit done.

Even with the opening quests in MMOs that are usually main story stuff I just skip right by it. I tried FFXIV and in the opening cutscene I wanted to skip it so bad, I ended up skipping it after trying not to. I guess Diablo-like games just remind me of MMO stories.

I couldn't tell you a summary of the story for 95% of the games I've played. Vidya is a garbage medium for storytelling so I don't even bother.

Most of the times it's not mechanics, it's objective.
Most of the people don't even read Quest Logs anymore, the objective needs to be displayed right there on the HUD and the batman vision needs to tell them where to go, otherwise they would be lost.
