I had a good time going through all the stories back when a couple years ago. Beating Rhapsodies chapter 3 at launch and even getting my voice in the chorus for the finale's song was quite the thrill.

Highly recommend anyone to give the game a shot if you never have, it's gotten better for the current audience of video games. I know it's not how it was for the old players, but it's still fun to go through at least once to say you did it.

I started from scratch in January and I quit originally around the same time frame as you after playing since NA release.

The amount of content you can and should do can be a little over bearing while you're starting out, but I've since gotten into the swing of things and I'm having a lot of fun. Getting shit done and experiencing a fair amount of the end game so far.

If you really think you want to try XI again, it's worth it.

All my friends from my original linkshell (Garuda) lasted from 2004-2008. With two of us left, we joined another LS, the last remaining friend from my original left in 2010.

In our new shell, we went from 2008 to late 2016, where the last remaining guy aside from me has left.

It's not hard to get back at all. Leveling is basically a solo affair now and you even get free gear for doing basic "quests" like killing X amount of monsters.

Just level to 99, get as many trusts as possible, and go do whatever you want from there. Reddit has an active community with plenty of new/returning player guides.

dnc and cor are both stylish as fuck, and good jobs too. they are a slight pain in the arse to get for a total newcomer on a fresh account. i cleared through tons of mission campaigns and unlocked them in my 30 day trial, but i'm a returning player that knew exactly what to do already.

dnc needs a little WotG progression. its not hard but its confusing to get around the zones and get the right cutscenes. theres a lot of blocked entrances and one-way paths and special maws to get around WotG maps.

COR is similar, but ToAU expansion progression instead. again, its only hard in the sense of finding your way around.

in both cases you'll just need to follow a wiki guide closely and git gud at navigating annoying fucking maps.

For your starting job, just do what looks the most enjoyable. You aren't going to have a whole lot of trouble leveling regardless of what you pick, just find the new players guide on Reddit or BG-wiki and check it out a bit so you aren't totally lost. There are some things they've added to the beginning of the game to help new player's out and they're better detailed in those.

Either way you're bound to level 5 of the 6 starting jobs to at least 49 if you plan on having any extended time with the game. Just avoid MNK because it's in a bad spot and isn't really useful as a sub job either.

Race stats/growths don't matter anymore due to the number-bloat that occurs when you get item level gear. I'd say that the best starting Job would be Warrior since it's solid in survivability and damage plus it's a great subjob option later. You can solo very easily with summonable Trusts, and this month is the perfect time to get them with the event going on that hands out a bunch of the best ones in the game.
