And that's the problem, he actually made the templars look good and I enjoyed playing as him. Then they decided to have him go rogue and turn into an asshole. The other problem with 3 was that they killed of desmond for seemingly no reason. I was actually interested in possibly playing as him in modern day. Doesn't matter anyway I stopped playing that series after 3.

Not him but he's the guy you use inside towns and most of the game is from his perspective, just because he's not the most important character doesn't mean he isn't the protagonist. There are tons of examples in fiction where the MC is overshadowed by more prominent characters (Gatsby, Sherlock Holmes, etc).
