Quake already demonstrated the engine. Quake was THE demonstration for the engine.

First off, the CP are human volunteers who gain additional benefits like better living conditions and more food. No they're not and a huge deal of this is made in the game with the drawings showing the human, combine, and chimpanzee side by side

the way the combine work is that they go to a planet, genetically alter the dominant species to work better within their framework, and repurpose that species for domination purposes (this makes sense so they can still use human vehicles weapons facilities etc)

they are like 99.9% human, but they are both genetically and cybenetically altered, they are no longer human.
