The reason for that has to do with Cold Steel's characters being more flat stereotypes than dynamic like Sky's
The setting is also cheesy LN-tier with the school setting, and the feuds between nobles and commoners is one of babby's first alt-universe pseudo-historical fiction setting tropes, which wasn't handled especially well even then
Also gameplay-wise there's absolutely no balance and any idiot can break the game to where every single boss fight isn't even slightly challenging on Nightmare, which was obviously received poorly as well

Besides those things it doesn't deserve all the shittalk it gets, since those are only a slight issue and don't really detract from the worldbuilding Trails is known for
It also does something I really appreciate, almost like a love letter to Skies of Arcadia and its ilk, where the first game is full of NPCs (students) with unique personalities and pastimes to interact with, and then the second game all those characters you hung out with for 70 hours are the crew members of your airship
Granted, it's still handled in a pretty typical JRPG way, like "you recruit shopkeepers/bonus items/etc," but aesthetically I was really happy with it

I wouldn't dare say all the bad aspects of it are invalid or should be overlooked, but I do think it's enjoyable despite them
There's really not a whole lot of reason to skip that arc entirely since they're not BAD games, especially when the PC ports get finished
There's still a chance that CS3 could change that and actually be terrible, but, I trust Falcom for now after how good Ys VIII was

I really like Blue Destination from CS2. It was pretty exciting when it first played. But it was also the moment I realized how much of a super special snowflake Rean was, which immediately dropped my opinion of the Cold Steel series in its entirety. Mixed feelings to say the least.

I was just so damn confused at how they did the pivotal scene of Rean learning to control the shrek. I was expecting that would be Rean's "beach scene" to put it in Sky terms. Instead we get a rushed scene about Alfin lecturing Rean about the feelings of Elise and class VII, who aren't even present. Way to kill all the emotion, guys. I suspect the reason they're backpedaling on the ogre in CS3 is because they regret making the scene so impactless and are planning on redoing the unshrekification of Rean with more oomph, and with more sensible characters.

Strawman. Trails has always had awful balance. It's no worse in CS1/2 than it is in FC/SC/3rd. They're just bad in different ways.

Actually the Sky trilogy has objectively worse balance solely due to how difficulty levels were handled.
