Literally more wealthy than the most powerful man in the free world

He predicted this as Steam grew and realized he can't take any chances doing or releasing anything that would heavily damage his or his companies credibility as a distributor or developer (Half Life 3)

It hurts me, but at least I've moved past it.

Gabe still has friends at Microsoft. He was made aware before just about anyone of the existence of Windows 10 S and Microsoft's plan to make it the primary version of Windows long before anyone else.

Knowing that this would kill PC gaming as we know it, he started pouring all of the resources Valve could spare into making GNU/Linux into a viable platform for PC gaming.
The nature of this sort of thing meant that Valve had to announce their initiative long before it was ready for mainstream consumption in order to get some kind of support for it which led to a lot of people writing it off as a failure or a foolish waste spurred on by paranoia.

Until a couple of weeks ago when Microsoft tipped their hand announcing 10 S. Now the wisdom of Gabe starting years ago is apparent. 25% of the entire Steam library, Nvidia drivers on par with their Windows counterpart, and Linux-exclusive AMD drivers that are actually good isn't a bad starting point.

Sure they could, it's just that doing what they're currently doing is a much more profitable use of their time.

If you are a creative employee with a great idea for a game, you have to pitch it to Gabe based on how much money it will earn. It could be the greatest game in the world but they won't make it if they don't think it can be turned into a cash cow.
>>
>>376767135

Complete bullshit. Valve just didn't want to be held to the whims of Microsoft and whatever changes they made. Additionally the writing is on the wall that Xbox will eventually be merged with windows support, or rather visa versa.

Really Valve's only real competition would be if microsoft decides to double down on their xbox market and bake the xbox software into win10 allowing for their games to be played on either a console or PC. One digital purchase and it would work on either, simply tied to your microsoft account. Overnight they would have a HUGE userbase. With everything being X86 it would only be an issue of driver support and comps being beefy enough.

Valve just wants to not be under microsofts thumb if they become a legitimate competitor, so they opted for fucking linux with it's lacking driver support and API's in the hopes that if they brought he audience the support would follow.
>>
So with the recent gifting changes, I know friends from other countries on Steam can no longer gift you games but could a friend log into your account from another country and buy the game?
>>
>>376767709
There's no way that 10 S stays confined to a limited set of hardware. Outside of PC gaming hardware its likely to become the norm as Windows OEMs race to the bottom.
Without the normies PC gaming as we know it will go from a 150 million or so users, to something more like 20 million.
That would be good for Linux gamers, they'll go from 1% to 10% pretty quickly as the Windows population on Steam drops like a rock.
It also means though that there will be a lot less money in PC gaming so we'll have another mini crash like the one we had in the early 00s after the Xbox came out and before Steam.

Should also point out that if you want a stripped down OS ChromeOS already exists, and getting it running desktop Linux stuff doesn't cost anything. Google even made the user experience better by using Wayland (next-gen Linux graphics layer).

>Really Valve's only real competition would be if microsoft decides to double down on their xbox market and bake the xbox software into win10 allowing for their games to be played on either a console or PC.

If you hadn't noticed, that's exactly what Microsoft are doing. 10 S can only run applications from the Windows Store and coincidentally Microsoft is putting Xbone games onto the store.

>so they opted for fucking linux
Its the only real option out there other than making yet another BSD which would require more work for less support, or building an OS from scratch which is basically impossible.

>with it's lacking driver support
This is no longer true. The Nvidia driver is the same one as Windows and on-par in performance in apples to apples comparisons. The AMD driver is better than AMD's own, and continuing to improve.
The only time you see lower performance on Linux is when you take games written for Microsoft's non-standard APIs and porters have to retro-fit them to the standard. Its like back when people thought IE was a better browser because there were all those pages with 'Better with IE' badges that fucked up in Chrome because they were non-standard shit.

>and API's
Vulkan is technologically superior to everything else available today. Microsoft's insistence on forcing people to use inferior console graphics solutions is as horrible as Apple's attempt to force mobile graphics on the desktop.

>>
>>376771153
The whole point of the Store and 10 S is that it doesn't allow Steam. What would Steam even do if it was in the store but you couldn't install and play games with it?

Microsoft won't even allow Chrome or Firefox on the store and you think they'd allow Steam?

iTunes isn't a front end for installing third party software.
Read up on the history of Microsoft and Apple. Apple is Microsoft's one chosen token competitor they keep around to keep regulators off their back.

Also wouldn't be surprised if that Windows 10 iTunes has to use Trident instead of webkit. That definitely wouldn't be fun for the devs.

Microsoft's losing control is exactly why they're locking things down.
I guess you could look at it as the roles now being reversed.
Apple wants into the Windows Store to hurt Google and GNU/Linux and let them show off Windows as their competition.

This isn't entirely correct afaik. Gaben talks about it somewhere, he basically states that based off the success of the apple store it was inevitable that Microsoft would create their own store. He notes that by ensuring a closed system they can maintain and profit based off who is on the store.

Reminder that Gabe was right.

>Team Fortress and Counter Strike, two Quake mods, are sold as standalones and become extremely popular
>in-game shops in TF2, CSGO, and DOTA 2 sell community-made mods to players and split the revenue between Valve and the mod creator, nobody takes issue with this and MANY MILLIONS of people use this system
>Valve takes WHAT THEY WERE ALREADY DOING a step further and lets average joe Workshop mod creators charge for mods (Steam is, after all, a platform for selling digital IP)
>community flips shit because they mistakenly think that Valve is putting an end to free mods
>everybody conveniently forgets the fact that nobody bought the Skyrim mods in question even though Valve pitched them super hard, proving that the uproar over "paid mods" was unnecessary
>>
>>376766284
He looks like such a piece of shit now with his new glasses and haircut.
>>
>>376774223
the fear was that content creators would stop putting their work up for free on sites like the nexus and loverslab and swap over to the paid modding model. The initial trial failed before it even took off, and during this time there was severe damage done to the modding community. People were taking free mods off the nexus and uploading them as their own to steam workshop for money. The whole thing was a shit show.

It's not like there weren't a few people who did actually try to cash in, either, by producing middling-effort mods that they would previously have just released for free, for an entirely unreasonable price. Thankfully as far as I know barely anyone fell for their shit and last I heard on the situation most of them had their standing/reputation within the modding community severely damaged by their own attempts at jewing the community.
>>
>>376774426
If their intent was to do paid mods they shouldn't have simply opened the floodgates; instead they should've only opened up paid mods on new games, so modders knew what they were getting into and existing mods didn't get fucked with.

Paid mods are fine

You understand Microsoft and Apple have gotten in serious legal hot water for way more convoluted schemes than that right?
Microsoft is the company who were so scared shitless over BeOS that they went around to OEMs and threatened them to only ship Windows or pay full price. That effectively killed Be even though its still in many ways technologically superior to anything else around.
Apple are so afraid that desktop hardware will scale down to challenge their mobile success that they've blocked vendors from offering anything more than the 7 year old OpenGL 4.1, or their mobile graphics API on MacOS.
