Most games you play solo and fight humans. When you do fight things bigger than humans, you use powers or magic. So fiction makes spears pointless.

But in reality they're the best thing ever. You simply cannot use swords if you're fighting in a group. Or you can, but you'll end up using them like a short spear, so just use a spear instead.
