Super Mario Sunshine was great, the thing is that the stages were too "Realistic" and that made them a bit of a pain to navigate. Just look at Rico Habor here >>376771989

It's probably why some of the most fondly remembered areas in the game are the hidden zones, Mario Galaxy was even designed off of them because people liked them so much, and it's probably a big reason why Galaxy is considered such a good game.
