Shouldn't this be relatively trivial by now? A quick google and you learn how. Carmack reinvented it while on Softdisk and they made a mock up Mario 3 game to impress potential employers (they mailed it to Nintendo, then to Sierra, etc.) and impressed everyone, but they didn't have the learning resources modern game devs do
