>inb4 that faggot complains about people not explaining why we like the games in our 3x3

>Dark Souls
Mostly nostalgia, I played it when I was 13 and it would end up having a major influence on the types of games I would enjoy. Truly made me realize how important atmosphere is in games, and the difference between having good atmosphere and bad atmosphere in games is what I feel seperates games that use the medium well from games that don't
>Planescape: Torment
What more is there to say? Some of the best writing there is in vidya, and not only is the writing phenomenal, but the amount of choice you have in shaping dialogue and the story is unrivalled. The characters are all quirky and memorable, and every time you play through the game you just gain even more appreciation for it.
>Xenogears
This one I've always had mixed feelings about. As I get older, my feelings on the game have changed a lot. The story has a fuckton of plotholes, the second disk is a mess, but I still have to give credit for the game for just the things it tried to do. I ended up finishing the game despite it being rather boring and tedious at times just for the thrill of seeing what crazy plot twist the game would throw next. It has a solid atmosphere, and it's one of the few jrpgs from the playstation1 era that really captured me.
>FE5
I've always been on the fence between either this one or FE4 for being on the list. Both have far away the most interesting worlds and characters of all the fire emblem games, though fe5 edges out fe4 for me for a few reasons. One being Leif, who is one of the most interesting protagonists ive ever enjoyed following in a game. Secondly, the gameplay is much more interesting. It's challenging and ruthless, but it also gives you a lot more freedom in terms of building your party, and I heavily enjoyed the addition of scrolls. Plus, I enjoyed the smaller scale of fe5 to fe4.

>System Shock 2
Yet again another game with amazing atmosphere. The combination of strong atmosphere with heavy amounts of player choices and freedom automatically elevates a game to the highest tiers. Not much more to say that hasn't been said.

>Fallout: New Vegas
The pure, and simple joy of role-playing. Wandering around the wasteland, watching the game open up with more and more choices available the farther you go. I enjoyed the unique setting compared to other RPGs, which is also one of the reason ps:t stood out for me as well

>Tactics Ogre
Quite possibly my favorite game on the list. Fun SRPG gameplay, a solid story which never overextends itself and remains elegant every time I play through it. Such an underrated gem considering it has to live in the shadow of FFT, though I consider it superior to that game in pretty much every way.

>NieR
Yoko Taro's best game. I've always felt the lore of the Taroverse was one of the least interesting things about it, and the truly great part of these games where the characters. Specifically, the way character's react and get emotionally invested in the events around them. Yoko Taro is a master at this (if only this) and in shines in NieR better than any other game. I didn't really find the gameplay all that terrible as well (especially compared to drakengard), and the magic system was pretty cool. Automata was a worthy sequel, but doesn't quite reach the same heights this one did. Also the OST is amazing.

>Nocturne
For a game with such a low budget, it always boggles my mind how they were able to create such an engrossing low-res hellscape atmosphere. One of my favorite games just for walking around. Press turn is a bit unrefined here, especially compared to smt4 and 4a, but it's still plenty fun, and hard mode adds lots of replayability. True ending is pretty memorable, and it even features dante from devil may cry. What else is there to say?

>>
>>376760074
Never played Dishonored so can't comment on that but it's probably the closest thing we'll get to a System Shock successor. Levels are very open, game lets you tackle obstacles in a lot of ways and you have to actually think about how you spend your skill points.
Since you liked SS2 I'd say it's worth checking out at some point.
>>
>>376760417

I compare it to dishonered because it was made by the same company as Prey, Arkane. Dishonered modeled itself after the "immersive sim" elements that you mentioned as well.

looks they kept all that good stuff though, will try it out.

Bloodborne. I'm being serious, this is not a meme. The game really is that fantastic and for someone who has Majora's Mask, Deus Ex and MGS2 in his mosaic picture I know for a fact you will love it.
Also Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1 if you haven't played those. Start with Demon's. I also loved NieR

>>
>>376764738
Did you try using a Royalty build? It's a good way to get used to the game without getting overly frustrated since magic is pretty broken in that game.
>>
>>376764935
Idek what i did for my build, I never read up on the meta. I like to go into games knowing as little as possible. Guess thats not the move for Souls?
>>
>>376765153
Souls games are definitely games you want to go in as blind as possible. Figuring stuff out is really satisfying in those games. Doesn't mean you won't run into a few snags here and there though.

>>376764935
Nah, magic at your first playthrough takes all the fun out of the game imo.
>>376764738
What exactly caused you problems?
The most important thing in playing a souls game is not to rush things. Use common sense like carefully peek around corners before entering a seemingly harmless building/area. The game has a lot of traps ready for you, but only a few could be considered cheap.
Enemies usually have a set of moves they telegraph to you, study those move sets and you will always know their weakness/when to strike.
During combat against foes always use lock-on in the beginning, it will make the fights much, much easier for you.
Always keep an eye at your own stamina bar or get a sense for it and know your characters movement and its speed with different kind of weapons.

You're a cool guy, anon.
>>
>>376764697
Tell me more about Deadly Premonition, is it like Alpha Protocol where it's one of the best worst games out there?
>>
>>376758686
Is Nier Automata actually good for gameplay or is it just muh feels/story/anime memedom?

Is the level design decent?
>>
>>376765790
Yes, that's really an apt comparison. However, whereas Alpha Protocol is playable, just extremely janky, I had to resort to a lot of external fixes to get DP to run on PC, including at least seven separate crashes for different reasons. It was quite annoying, but 100% worth, imo. The camp is absolutely glorious, and the plot has tremendous payoff. I can't recommend it enough to people that have a thick skin of patience.
>>
>>376765614
Just the checkpoint system or lackthereof. I really hate doing the same shit over and over, just not my idea of fun. Atmosphere was incredible and the combat had such a neat feel though. If I could savescum or something I'd probably love it.
>>
>>376765987
The gameplay has noticeably less combo depth than most Platinum titles, which is my biggest complaint about it, but it's still really tight and solid. Nevertheless, the game's entire weight mostly relies on the story, yeah.
>>
>>376765987

The gameplay is pretty solid. I found the genre switching pretty fun as well.

You're going to have to be pretty patient with the game though if you go in with the mindset of "why do people like this shit??"
>>
>>376765987
Have you played Bayo? It's a watered down version of that. Nothing special but it's not bad, just really average hack n slash gameplay.
>>
>>376766000
WHhat's the gameplay even like, Wikipedia has it labeled as a 'survival horror' are we talking like REmake here?
>>
>>376766558
The shooting segments are very much a shitty RE4, but you'll spend a lot more of your time with shitty driving controls and solving puzzles.
