Anyone who's been exposed to more technical, more dynamic fighting games will quickly pass on tekken. Other top fighters, namely Street Fighter, KoF and MK have advanced impressively in their latest installments; but the relic that is tekken just can't seem to evolve, furthermore many combos can be done simply by hitting 1-button, and the nearly "instant-kill" rage art moves are just laughably broken. Instead of a supplying a proper fighting engine, matches in T7 seem to rely heavily on "who can get their rage move off first". So many elements of the gameplay don't even require any sort of skill. In my book, slow motion over and over again also gets old very quickly. And in the end, it's more of a novelty or gimmick rather than an actual, thought-out fighting game mechanic. But hey, the casual crowd will be pleased!

If you want something a little more "button-masher-friendly," tekken might be your cup of tea.... Key word, might.

The only thing I've ever had to worry about close to that in a 2D fighter are overheads and maybe certain crossups. It isn't an omnipresent thing like it is in 3D fighters because you can't jump in a truly 3D fighting game.

For me it's a huge difference maker in how I have to approach the gameplay of a 3D fighting game. Take it for what you will but for me it's always been something that requires faster thinking than an average 2D scuffle. The only times it reaches that level of processing for me in a 2D game is when I'm dealing with a character who can vortex me.

Maybe I'm speaking from too high a level. I actually basically started playing the game by learning Kazuya so I didn't spend time with "easy" characters. Josie has a lot of wavedash and advancing attacks that make it easy to pressure but without having to JF everything like a Mishima.

Meanwhile Asuka seems to be mixup-friendly but that means you as a player need to be able to know how to condition an opponent to react a certain way, which isn't something a new player might feel comfortable with.

You can't combo off pokes. The fastest combo starter most characters have is a 15 frame hopkick that's unsafe.

There's a category of moves between standing and crotching that's called while standing. These are done during recovery from a crouch.

The high/mid/low dichotomy is completely different from 2D games. High attacks can be blocked standing and whiff crouching characters, mids are blocked standing but hit crouching characters, and lows are the same as in 2D games.

Tekken's okizeme is extremely elaborate with unique actions such as low and mid kicks, kip ups, siderolling, cross chops, etc. The knockdown position you're in also has a big impact on the frame data for the aforementioned wakeup kicks.

No problem. It's missing characters exclusive to the home version (bears, Eddy etc) but it's mostly good to go. Stay away from advanced and you should be good, medium will be fine if you put in a little work. One thing different from 2D fighters is you absolutely need to get movement down before you attempt a specific character. Speaking from experience, the majority of the skill ceiling in Tekken is in your left hand, not your actual attack buttons. Attacks are more rhythm-based than in SF/GG too so listen out for the little ticks when you're in practice mode.

50 hours is nothing, I've been playing for years and I'm only average. A week or two of playing is nothing,especially for a game you're potentially going to be playing for about 5 years. Nailed it. Learn the mechanics, learn movement, then learn which range you're most comfortable with. It's the same reason people say to start with Ryu, to see if you naturally sway towards being offensive/defensive and if you use your fireballs a lot etc. Similar thing here, once you have movement down put the AI on hard or something and just move around them as they come at you. Some naturally stay close and block followed by counters, some stay midrange to bait whiffs and others poke from afar. Then you know who really works for you.

If that sounds too tedious for you, pick someone like Feng who can play competently at all ranges once you have movement and see how you use him.

You'll do great as long as you have patience. A lot of people make the mistake of correlating their winrate to their skill level/potential. When you start you'll get fucked repeatedly, but over weeks you'll slowly improve and get to grips with it. It isn't overnight. Try not to let it get to you, it takes a shit ton of discipline and will be hard at times but you can climb high if you're patient. It's relevant for Tekken more than SF probably since a lot of Tekken's difficulty is getting to grips with the basics. In SF you can reach an OK level relatively fast but then get hit with a wall that feels like you're shit, but in Tekken that wall is what you need to climb over to start. Once you understand the basics you'll love it.
