They didn't "gut" anything. There's always been a different dragon system since 2. The gene system was cool but BOF III suffered in that half its cast was useless. Ryu with healing, dragon magic, and bonebreak was just so OP.

Meanwhile IV balanced all the characters out and gave them unique and different roles in battle. The combo system allowed for much more cool stuff beyond what any of the dragon transformations in 3 could offer. They also made up for a lack of different transformations with special animations for each breath attack and then special summons for the world dragons.

I understand what you're trying to say but it irks me as the gene system is really cool but it's not really a defining feature of the series. It was just in one game.

Oh yeah like there were really that many viable dragon gene combinations. All they were good for was the claw attacks and magic if you were running an int Ryu. Other than that it was basically gimmick forms and some really cool sprites.

There's not even that many viable options. Most end up as generic dragons or whelps. There's some cool ones like Behemoth, Tiamat but really the dragon system doesn't offer near as much raw power and utility to the team as IV's Dragon Summons do.

I get it, you're okay with half the characters being terrible and lack of any strategy in how you set up your attacks. But the gene system really wasn't that groundbreaking. It just wasn't.

Viability is not the issue in such a piss easy game. Variety is insanely appreciated, on other hand. Game even had debuff breath. It was possible to replenish dragon HP with any simple healing magic, too, unlike 4 which limits this to either rest or rare as fuck items making dragon form far less usable.

Besides, can you become a metal dragon in 4 and shoot with a big-ass bomb? No? Then its dragon system is shit.

Force gene/No force gene + element gene + lesser/higher one-dimensional stat buffing gene - that's all with the exception of Kaiser which take 3 useless on their own genes and combines them into a useful form. If anything, both games are trash RPGs and Chrono Cross blows them out of the water in customization, artstyle, atmosphere, characters, humor, etc.

I loved BoF 3 as well as the rest of the BoF series. Also the series turned me into an otherkin. I keep that autism tempered down (social anxiety and self-shaming does that) but I do look at a *lot* of furry/scalie porn.

As for games I played no one else did....Saga Frontier and Beyond The Beyond.

Bought and played this for the first time recently on PSN. Really dug the visuals, the combat was a bit simplistic but alright, but man did the constant shitty minigames destroy my interest. Loved this guy though.
