I still remember starting the HOMM3 tutorial and getting gnoll flail after defeating some gnolls as a kid 15 years ago. It was cool and much bigger in my head, made you wonder about the world, lore and so on. Entire castle that's underground and full of laser eyes, how cool is that?
After all the years you eventually see how it was all balanced, how everything on the map is on a grid, how to abuse 1-stacks and a lot of charm dies.

Because you can't enjoy life anymore, it's not the game's fault, you're the filter which turns everything into insipid mediocre and generic.

You have developed a tolerance for everything, entertainment, food, music, porn, little by little every thing that you like starts to become the things that you hate, in your memory you believe it's the environment which is failing to provide enough substance, but in reality is you which cannot absorb the essence the same, it only spirals downward from here, unless you do drugs or have some sort of epiphany like becoming gay, having close relatives/friends die or finding out you were a corporate slave and dropping it all to become a sculptor etc.

theyre made for the customer now. before it was whetever people thought played fun, but now its trends, catering and demographics. thats not to say all games are shit, cause theres still a demographic for fun, but its just easier for the everyman casual to identify a genre as one they enjoy instead of critically thinking of mechanics they enjoy either through gameplay or discussion, so they leave it to marketing and 'journalists' to explain the fucking genre of a game.

This is why so many indies think they're hot shit, they set out to prove the point that they're different from both the public and restricted developers, but then they fail to make a game that's viscerally fun.

games aren't made for gamers anymore. bitching anonymously on the internet doesn't give us any command, so all we can do is seek out and praise games we hold of value. the irony of /v/ is that everyone is so passionate because of the anonymity, so the individual reader has to find the medium in the discussion of two passionate anons. over time the medium is understood, but there will always be heated discussion.
