I genuinely don't understand why people like Dragon Quest 9

>Terribly implemented class system ruins pacing
>Huge focus on tedious MMO-styled 'collect 15 boar livers' side quests
>Enemies on the overworld ruins fight diversity since you only end up fighting enemies that can outrun you on the map
>Party is DQ1-3 styled create a character with no personality

Doesn't help that the game was designed for high-density multiplayer in Japan, so fully 1/3 of the actually interesting parts of the game are completely unusable in the rest of the world.

For that matter, I sure do love farming metal slimes and not fighting anything else in the entire game because it's about five times more efficient to skip all mobs in the overworld and just farm metal slimes for exp when you need to beat a boss.

I enjoyed the grottos and all of the extra post game quests. The classes were pretty interesting and I felt like they gave you more strategies to work with compared to the other DQ games.

First I disagree with you on the class system, it's one of my favorite ones from a DQ game.

Secondly the quests were actually way more interesting than you average fetch quest because they noramlly applied some sort of condition to whatever you did like "kill 3 <high level enemy found in deep level of dungeon> while your whole party is naked".

DQ IX is fine but the focus on postgame content grinding is mainly what annoys me about it. That and the hero is completely non distinct and the game treats you like your companions don't exist. I wish there was a unique hero class, but that would fuck with the metagame they focused the whole thing on apparently.

This is my entire issue with JRPGs to begin with. I guess if you like that type of gameplay, taking it to the extreme with DQ9 is what people like? But it's a life-style choice to play chore simulators anon. Some people just never grow out of it.

I personally like JRPGs for the charming characters, the atmosphere of "going on an adventure with your buddies, through the woods and mountains and into forgotten ruins" because that's something I didn't get to do in real life, and the consistently good music these games tend to have.
Sometimes these games also have decent plots but that's a game-to-game sort of thing within the genre.

Dragon Quest in particular is relaxing and light hearted, evoking that sort of "80s/90s" Disney feel of a family-friendly and funloving atmosphere that sometimes turns dark or sometimes has old man perversion. The battle system isn't the most enthralling in the genre, no, but it works and I don't hate it.

You were able to make a full party as quickly as you made it to Stornway, the enemies were as balanced as it got in a Dragon Quest title, the lack of random encounters make things more bearable and creating your own party made it stand out for me more. Add on the grottoes and revocation and you have my second favorite JRPG of last gen. I've put in over a thousand hours overall and brought a second copy because fuck that Inn upgrading plus I liked the game that much.
