>According to research done by analytics firm Newzoo, 42 percent of esports viewers surveyed do not actually play the games they watch.
>Specifically, Newzoo studied the esports viewing habits of people in 10 different Western countries: the United States, Canada, Germany, the UK, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Sweden. Their findings focused on three heavy-hitters in esports: League of Legends, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. 191 million people surveyed reported watching esports “frequently,” and another 194 million reported “occasionally” watching esports streams.
>Because almost half of these viewers don’t play the game that they watch, Newzoo speculates that esports live-streams and commentary provide a source of engagement for “lapsed” players who don’t have the skills to keep up with the pros. Newzoo also found that 70 percent of esports viewers only focused on following one game in particular, with League of Legends raking in the highest share.

I played football from elementary school to a DI school in college. To get a football game you need:

>at least 53 players, college typically allows 85 players per team
>equipment
>a 100 yard marked field
>7 refs
>coaches and gameplans

This takes a tremendous amount of time, money and effort. Meanwhile, in vidya, I can sit at home in my underwear and download a game then play it.
>>

>You can still go play the fucking game you dweeb.

But many people can't play at that level, they get frustrated and the game simply isn't fun for them, so they enjoy watching people compete. It's literally no different, many sports fans will play a casual game, but could never actually play in a major sports league.

Why do you think that sports video games are super popular with people that like sports?

Watching games is free.
>>
>>376727124
Well, unlike something like actual sports, you assume some level of physical familiarity with the actual game to really appreciate what's going on. MOBAs are boring as shit to watch if you don't know the game. Counter-Strike is a little more fastpaced, but again, you should still be familiar with the level of strategic thinking that a lot of teams will incorporate on top of raw statistics.

Beyond that, the barrier of entry for anything resembling competitive play is much lower in video games.

In sports, you need the playing field, equipment, etc.

In video games? Dota 2? Counter-Strike? Sure, you may not be playing as well as the pros, but you're playing the same fucking game as them.

Why would people watch shit they don't even know?

Even regular-ass sports are boring as shit if you don't know how it's played.

Kart racing at your local track doesn't go bellow the lower hundreds, if that. If you go at an actual amateur league in most sports you'll start running into the 4 digits in training/equipment/traveling alone.

Equipment wise, football is cheaper. However, you need a team to play. 11 people on offense and 11 on defense. Plus special teams and backups. An NFL roster of pros is 53 men; college rosters are 85 men.

I play flag football; 7 vs 7 and it's still a pain in the ass to get enough people to play

The point of watching people who are good is to learn from them and improve, if you give up you're just a casual who deserves to wallow in their own filth. It's essentially a replacement for having a proper community, like a real life fighting game community, where you're bound to meet people much better than you. The people that give up after being trashed are trash and aren't really dedicated to what they're playing, the people that stick it out and still attend knowing they're not among the best improve. Those eople need to learn to apply themselves

How can you have ANY PVP without it being balanced? What would be the point if there were obviously OP shit in the game? Everyone would just pick that thing and most the elements would go unused. Just look at Overwatch when it launched, "competitive" was a joke because only 1/4th of the roster was ever used.
People are competitive by nature so having unbalanced win/lost pvp NEVER works. Sure, MW2 was fun for a couple months, but the horrible balance ruined any and all longevity.

If you go through most of the popularly-played competitive videogames, you'll find that nearly all of them (Counter-Strike, StarCraft, Street Fighter, Dota 2, League) are aping formulas from 15-20 years ago, and getting outclassed by games which are creating new and better formulas.

>>376729109
The correct argument is that good sports are played with your entire body, with a totality of the skills that we developed in order to survive and carry on our genes, while videogames (outside of some outliers like Dance Dance Revolution) are played with your hands and your brain, and that's it.

The difference in complexity between performing a Shoryuken in Street Fighter and throwing an uppercut in a boxing should be immediately obvious to anyone who has done both.

Videogames are already more complex than chess. Chess simulates war, and there's an entire genre (RTS) that does it better.

Once you've turned chess into Chessmaster, and then Battle Chess, and then Archon, it's only a matter of time before you turn the board into a battlefield, and make everything move in real-time.

>A few weeks ago, I was at a dinner and one of the people present told me that she had stopped going to Mass. My heart sank. Lord knows, there are often good reasons for people to be frustrated with the Church, but, still, the thought of not going to Mass on Sunday is so incomprehensible to me that whenever I hear of someone leaving, I can’t get my mind around it and my emotional response comes to fore. It makes me very sad.

>Sadness may be an appropriate feeling, but it is not a moral, still less an ecclesial, response to this phenomenon. Next week, on March 22 from 3-6 p.m. Catholic University’s Institute for Policy Research & Catholic Studies (where I am currently a visiting fellow) will be sponsoring a symposium on “Lapsed Catholics” to examine this sad phenomenon. The event is co-sponsored by Villanova University’s Center for the Study of Church Management.

>The phrase “lapsed Catholic” is telling. I never him someone talk about a “lapsed Presbyterian” or a “lapsed Methodist.” The word “lapsed” means a falling away, but it does not imply a complete and total severance of a connection. There is a sense, at the very least, that a person can always come back. I raised this point with Professor William Dinges, Professor of Religious Studies at CUA and one of the principal speakers at the symposium. It turns out, he explained to me, that social science surveys confirm the point. If you have a Methodist or a Presbyterian who has not belonged to an active congregation for some years, and you ask that person their religious identity, they say they have none. But, if you ask a Catholic who has not crossed the threshold of a church in many years what their religious identity is, they will say that they are Catholic.

What the fuck is going on? Who watches sermons instead of fucking going to church?

For real. Why do people watch football instead of play it? Let me guess: is it because it's an event that draws the best players from around the country and has them go head-to-head in a massive tournament? Is it because every time a check clears for a player the game isn't brought to a screeching halt to let said player say, "Thanks, Bank of America for clearing my check! Keep watching the NFL for more hit plays! And if you like what you see, be sure to subscribe to NFL Sunday Ticket! Alright, play ball!"

No, it must be something else. I bet they watch football instead of playing because actual effort is required to gather up the other players. Also you need a field. Don't forget about the severe time/weather restrictions: you're probably not going to get a game together at 3am if it's snowing. Most of these popular video games are completely free and can run on the shittiest of computers. The process of finding other players has gotten so lazy that the game matches you up with people for you. Don't have the time or effort to put together a team? No problem, the game will do it for you! And you can always find people to play 24/7.

Obviously the two are the same, right? Perhaps if watching people play a game was simply that: watching them play. But instead it becomes a gauntlet of shout-outs, announcements of subscriptions, and begging for money.

The reason people watch football and don't play is because actual football requires years of physical training, learning countless physical strategies, techniques and formations, conferring with and trusting your teammates to carry their weight, all that.

Esports requires no physical training (even a sleep-deprived, bags-under-eyes basement dweller with stick-arms can be good at it), no strict need to rely on teammates to succeed (or else 'carrying' wouldn't be a term), and you don't need to learn any rules.

Watching a couple YT videos of the optimal build of a hero in League is enough for you to know how to hold your own even among high level players.

Esports and real sports are two completely different realms of competition. And probably most damning of all is, absolutely nothing you learn or master in esports is going to help you in real sports, or vice versa. because they are nothing alike, they have nothing in common.

>>
>>376742536
That's all fucking irrelevant to why most people watch sports or e-sports, though. The biggest drive for any type of sport is narrative built through competition that is then propagated and popularized by the crowd.

Appreciation for the sport and understanding of it is of course a factor for hardcore fans, but you do not need to be any good at a sport or even knowledgeable about it to be able to get invested in the competition. This is true both for e-sports and regular sports, which makes the whole "they should not even be put on the same level due to the amount of effort involved" argument meaningless.
>>
>>376742536
>Watching a couple YT videos of the optimal build of a hero in League is enough for you to know how to hold your own even among high level players.

This is more true than people understand. Especially when you take those high tier players and put them on a playground where they've had enough practice as you.

2 friends of mine played League of Legends and gave me an account to play with them. We played Twisted Treeline ranked and would commonly get matched against challenger players from 5s solo or 5s team and win.

My first season of the game I finished as Diamond and had my second and last as Challenger ranked.

Man, the two things that piss me off about this whole "esports" shit is why call it sports in the first place? It's a bunch of nerds that want to show those bully jocks that they're cool and do sports too. Call it what it is, professional gaming or something, but to call it sports is ridiculous. Secondly, which stems off the first point, if they want it so bad to be like actual sports, why do they promote good sportmanship so much? The amount of shit talk that goes on in actual sports is unreal and it's good for the sport.

I mean, imagine if any of these "professional gamers" ever said this during a game to the other team? They would be banned for life. It's a competition, let the competitors have their competitive fire and try and get in the heads of their opponents, but no, the fucking toxic meme has ruined all that shit.

>only 58% play as well as watch
Enormously better than with real sports.

Nobody is equating e-sports with real sports, necessarily, but the principle is the same, you can enjoy watching something hardly ever do yourself.

Almost like TV, except with TV you mostly watch stuff you definitely will never do.
