Just play the first game (and maybe the second) and pretend Chapters doesn't exist.

The Longest Journey is a decent point and click adventure game.
Dreamfall and Dreamfall Chapters are fucking godawful trash, especially Chapters.

I barely paid attention to the story after TLJ, anon. Dreamfall and Dreamfall Chapters is like a black hole for me. I remember thinking a lot of of it coming off as "making it up as we go". It's like Dreamfall is Ragnar's TLJ fan fiction, except he's literally the original creator. It's weird.
