The games biggest mistake is not appealing to the RTS comp stomp babbys.
They're the only RTS fans with a significant population. Total war is the most popular RTS on steam (yes, yes not an RTS) 95% of total war players dont even touch MP.
If they had a co op campaign, a Conquest overmap or a PvE like last stand it'd have a much higher player retention rate.
Campaign isnt terrible, just very forgettable. The voice acting and visuals have actually grown on me.
The multiplayer is pretty tight though, they should really market to burned out Dota players looking for something different. Could find a decent amount of players that way.

As much as people will disagree, this is true. The moment you try to pander to esports fags,you risk the game being stripped barebones to cater only to the multiplayer aspect, nevermind that the way DoW3 is today is because they balanced it around MOBAs which are not single player games.

Back then RTS games felt good because they were complete games that were given much attention to detail, not something hastily rushed to appeal to tourneyfags.
