It is good though, and uses way less SP than Ann. It's not the biggest damage dealer,but it's reliable and does good damage without being too big a drain on SP and it lets you keep Morgan and Ann exclusively for healing, letting you get through more of the dungeon. Though, the game is easy enough that you can get through the game with any party anyway, so you should just stick with the characters you like.

DDS is a bit of an exception, and Phys is still good in SMT IV, it's just only good if you level DEX instead of STR. And in Nocturne STR is easily the best, as well as in SMT 1 where the MC can't even learn Magic but the game still lets you level the stat.

He can also be best support character. He can focus on heals, revives and de/buffs while other characters do their own thing. It can be a godsend to save Ryuji the SP needed to cast his attack buff + Charge every time he wants to play God, and he has a tiny SP pool. I know I personally have trouble keeping Makoto's SP up with as much defense buffing as she does on top of heals.
