I don't think yume nikki was pretentious, things are there without any particulars reasons , letting the player imagine the story. It's pretty simple.
All players can have their own experience while playing it.

I wish we could know more about Kikiyama...

Because it's a simple yet unique experience from a guy who actually knew how to make a good atmosphere.

Also, it doesn't uses jump scares left and right like so many games these days. You have Uboa/Face and that's it. It's a comfy yet unsetling little game.

To be honest with you I tried it and found it to be boring. Once it's in the dream sequences proper it doesn't feel particularly atmospheric: it's too obvious that you're just looking at very basically coded and poorly drawn sprites flickering or occasionally moving around a 2D plane.

There's no intrigue to keep me invested in it at that point.

Yume Nikki is not pretentious, it literally doesn't say anything and leaves everything to your imagination, it's not much different from LSD aside the more depressing tone.
It's people trying to push hard whatever they see the actual problem.

Want to know what's pretentious instead? The fanmade sequels and spinogfs, now those are garbage that don't understand the appeal of the original.

I played this game like 10 years ago and didn't understand the appeal.
I still don't.

I get it's supposed to be explored but when most of the places in the game are empty repeating MSpaint backgrounds I don't see what interest it holds with people.
The dumbass theories on uboachan was the most interesting part of the game.
