It's absolutely worth playing if you're used to the game already. I personally didn't feel like paying to transfer my old character to Asura (western players decided to all congregate there, in that one spot and it's been working out marvelously) so I just made a new character and started from scratch 5 days ago.

Gotta say, everything is improved. The headaches have been taken out of most activities, leveling is MUCH faster as is travel. Money is not such a pain in the ass this time, there's more than double the content that there was with all the expansion packs and the endgame is supposedly really good but I'm quite a ways from it.

In 5 days I managed to get, 2 advanced jobs, 60 cap, rank 5, 1 piece of AF gear and a bunch of trusts. The game is much more fun in its current incarnation and there's lots of people playing, more than launch days even, which makes things that much better.

Now comeon, I love FFXI and even have my own private server because I loved the pre-99 stuff, but he's absolutely right about the overreliance of classes. Having RDM and BRD is just too good to simply not have, and people will outright refuse to do anything without them. Having different roles is fine, but it was hell back when I played retail to do anything if you couldn't find one of those two for your party.

The reasons people used those classes were for refresh which is something that's circumvented by new latent abilities, itmes and so forth now. Hell, Paladin gets auto refresh at level 35 now.

The game really has made some great changes since the mistake that was Abyssea.

It has a great feel of 75-era XI in some aspects though there have been quite a few quality of life changes that I believe most people are very happy with.

At cap (99, which takes ~2 weeks from a fresh account to reach), you can get right into group play quickly and start gearing up your jobs

Bonus to EXP gained being one of them which is great for new players.
