VR is a meme, just like in the 90s. You need to solve fundamental problems first and figure out some basic gamedesign principles before you try to peddle expensive hardware that needs to run on an even more expensive hardware.

>>376697486
Motion sickness mostly. VR itself is super fun, but most of the AAA stuff just isn't playable on it due to the motion sickness with the traditional movement. Teleportation movement sucks on the other side. And target shooting becomes pretty boring really fast.
So basically it's a really fun thing with little to none good content on it (and no ideas how to make any).

>What went wrong?
Oculus tried to be Sony with exclusives and took months to release their handsets. It kinda stalled things for a while.

That said, since their handsets came out and devs can count on more players having motion controls, more games seem to be coming out for them. It's the best way to interact with things in VR.
>>
nothing went wrong. it's a niche peripheral for people looking to make their games more immersive. same way people who like driving games have logitech steering wheels and people who like flight sims have hotas.

until they streamline the installation of vr and cut down on the number of wires it won't reach mainstream consumption. look at how well smartphone vr is doing in comparison, because it's affordable and intuitive.

Vive, it's the most complete product right now. That said, buy $1000 worth of poptarts instead, it's a better investment.
>>
>>376707565

After Oculus did that massive price drop I'm not sure anymore, the Vive is great but I'm not sure if it can compete with the price difference.

Either way be damned sure you're getting a roomscale setup, whilst seated experiences are okay, being able to actually interact with your surroundings naturally is what makes these headsets worth getting.

Also be fully aware that this is a poor investment, the technology is gonna evolve fast and the current headsets are gonna be left behind.
>>
>>376707565
I'd wait for gen 2 at this point. Vive have been showing a lot of addons in the making but it probably isn't long before they put them in a new headset.

It was only $130, and some people got it for free with the preorder. Overall, I think I have enjoyed over $130 worth of pirated porn, especially from cosplay VR, I was able to dl the whole site.

I don't get why they push (and people buy) the controllers. All I want is to play with kb+m and a VR headset instead of a screen. All they needed to do was to make that affordable instead of wasting R&D resources on remotes and room scaling or whatever they call it. There was no need for standing up except for gimmick games, it shouldn't have been the focus.

Because once you played those games and get used to having your hands in VR, KB&M and joypads feel too detached. Even simple things like picking stuff up to look at can add a lot to the immersion.

The roomscale stuff isn't ironclad either. A lot of games like Onward just let you move with the thumbstick/touchpad.
>>
>>376697550
>Could work with something like House of the Dead though.
No, it can't.

People seem to forget this, but light gun games had movement. What causes sim sickness? Movement, especially the kind of erratic camera that made light gun games great.

What VR works for is turret shooters, think Beach Head 2000. I suppose VR could work in a virtual arcade setting, but then you're getting into the whole "why am I strapping this shit to my head when I could just point the controllers at an actual screen for the exact same experience".

VR is just the latest in a long line of gimmicks.

Here's one that at least had some actual game support, playing HL2 with recoil and proper force feedback was actually pretty fun. Absolutely not worth the 200 dollar price tag though.

Meanwhile, VR is 1000 bucks minimum and doesn't even offer FFB. When it comes down to a sensible price, 200 bucks or so, there might be some interest. As it is, only idiots actually bought into a closed system with no games and no existing game support.

>>
>>376697486

Same thing as with the switch.

No good games.
>>
>>376721946
VR right now is a complete pipe-dream.

They've massively overpriced the hardware, and zero adoption means zero incentive to make games.

Meanwhile, Novint took a military grade haptic robot and reduced the cost to 1/100th to make a failed gaming device. I think something is going to come out of all this VR shit in 5-10years, but I don't think it'll be something you can really tie to these headsets as more than a concept. AR is the real future, VR is just the stopgap.
>>
>>376722293
Microsoft already has inside out tracking headsets for $300. It's only going to get cheaper.

>AR is the real future

Sure it is but AR is in addition to VR, people are still going to want completely immersive environments i.e. video games. All that says is things like the Hololens will do both. This will help with mass adoption beyond games is all so comparing console level adoption to cell phone level basically.
>>

Vive owner.

Lack of content plus the motion sickness which admittedly has gotten better over time as i got used to it.

Main killer is things to do, once you have played with the basic vr mechanics, pick up throw ect it all comes down to the games fun and sadly most VR games at the moment are built only on the 'wow look you can touch things' part of VR

Thankfully there is the likes of budget cuts sometime in the future as well as some official AAA games.

Its only been a year and a good games dev time is 2-3 years. Till then iv got hotdogs horseshoes and handgrenades to keep me busy, that dev is freaking nuts with his updates.

This is true seeing as PSVR sold more than oculus and vive combined in its first 4 months

there is always big investment and small return or loss at the start of tech like this' life.

When the next gen of consoles can handle this properly and give it to the masses at an affordable price, it will be the next television.

might be a decent idea to check out second-hand 1080s too, im sure a bunch of peeps are selling their 1080s and grabbing the 1080ti

1070 isn't bad though, im currently using it and it works great

I owned a Vive for six months and it was the most fun tech demo I've ever tried. That said I Craiglisted it to wait for the next generation.

I don't currently own a VR device (unless you count Google Cardboard), but I've tried each big VR headset.
Rift was pretty neat, although a bit tricky to focus. Using the Touch Controllers on the rock climbing game was very fun.
Vive was also good. It felt great to throw grenades in Arizona Sunshine.
PSVR was the most comfortable and easiest to focus. Rush of Blood was awesome and actually scared me.
I would probably get PSVR because it's the cheapest overall (I already have the Camera and I got the Move controllers back when they were released for the PS3).

How much is PSVR if you factor in the Camera and Move controllers?

I'll look into it. Is there a price or release estimation for those aGlass lenses? Are there any comparable alternatives?

I hope you heavily sanitised it beforehand.

Like other anon said, the main thing is rendering. Which may be a way to keep system requirements as screen resolutions go up.

I think the eye input could have many uses. From general expression stuff like in the pic to games knowing where exactly a player is looking for gameplay purposes. Think a game knowing which word of a letter you're looking out or if you're directly looking at a item instead of just pointing your head in it's general direction. Lots of little things.

The problem is the oculus and vive are effectively betamax.
They're already an outdated platform that nobody will ever go back to once a proper standardization happens.
They might still make headsets, but not in any capacity that will beat hardware tech giants like asus and samsung

That is a tech demo too. There are no proper full games for VR. Something with progressing stages, difficulty curve, mechanics, and possibly story. It's all just tech demos.

uh just because it's only rendering 30 frames doesn't mean it's 30 frames you can stretch the image to make fake frames and your brain can't tell the difference and if you throw up it's your fault because you were born with a shitty bodY DELTE THIS REEEEEEEE
>>
I have DK2 and only usage I have for it is party-piece. I'll show it to friends or relatives, give them a couple demos for them to play and go "wow, this is so cool, it's like I'm really there", then I put it back on the shelf and don't do shit with it, because there's nothing to do with it. There are no games I'd sit down and play through with it. What little hame can use it, always require me first going through some stupid secondary UI software, like SteamVR or OculusVR to launch my game, instead of just clicking the icon. It's just not worth the hassle so far, and I don't see how having a better VR helmet would solve any of these problems.
>>
>>376738225
> theres nothing to do with it
>unless you fake it to be a better vr helmet

Let's go over the list.
>there are no games to play through
>there are annoying shells required to use it
Both or those are applied to any other helmet. So what is your point?
