Well, you can still have that and perfection.
You can have the character stop upon colliding with the wall. And when the control is released and pressed again a different running-into-wall animation quickly happens.

Because character move speed is programmed for playability, but NPC move speed is programmed for perceived realism.

Npc walk/run speed is probably looked at and changed <5 times total. Character walk/run speed is changed dozens of times a month with every new feedback from playtesting and additional gameplay elements that interact with character walking/running like platforming, running+gunning, racing, and events in cutscenes that create expectations in gameplay.
