0, 1, or 4 are all fine places to start. 0 because it's the most recent one and is a prequel that has all the major improvements and minigames other games brought to the table, 1 because it's the start and every game after will keep improving so it's not as rough to go back to them, and 4 because it introduces three more main characters on top of Kiryu and you can go in without any sort of history on the games and still understand what's going on.

I'd say just play the games in release order. Having played most of the games in the series, most of them hold up really well, but 1's kind of jank at times and Kenzan is also kind of jank.

0's a good enough entry point if you just want to start with the most recent entry, though.
Kiwami's coming out in a few months and that's a remake of 1 in 0's engine, so you might also want to pick that up if you end up liking 0.
From there just go in release order, ignoring spin-offs if you want to.

In what way is 3 a good entry point? The entire first two or three hours is babysitting everyone at the orphanage, and Ryukyu's entire first visit is just you fighting with Rikiya's crew until you beat up those other guys and then finally get to leave to Kamurocho. Then 5 chapters later you come back to Okinawa and you're back to an hour or two of babysitting again. It would easily put people off of their first experience. Hell, once you beat Majima in chapter 1 you don't even really have a major fight outside of Rikiya which takes absolutely forever to reach.

Yakuza 1 is the optimal place to start if at all possible.
If not, Yakuza 0 is the next best option, though you'll miss a few references. It's also a prequel so you might have a different experience if you play this before 1 and vice-versa. Some scenes will have a different tone depending on your series knowledge.
Beyond that, follow release order, though I don't see why you would.
1 has one of the worst mandatory english dubs ever
2 is pretty fucking awesome and still holds up really well
3 had a major amount of side-content stripped out of it
4 has a recap of every game before it and introduces some hype characters

Kiryu is the only character that you could argue looks Eurasian/hapa (well, maybe Daigo too), everyone else looks 100% Jap (a lot of them are even based on real actors and JAV idols). Yakuza, along with Way of the Samurai and Shenmue is one of the few games that actually has realistic looking Asians. It could even be argued that the characters looking so Asian is one of the reasons it's never taken off with Western normalfags, since they think the game "looks too Japanese" for their tastes.

The thing is that their dictionary terms don't have to be too in-depth because the games only brush a surface level of the history, they don't require you to know the history at all otherwise Kenzan would be awful as a foreigner. You just need a brief overview of the historical people you meet, maybe terms like Yuujos (Or whatever Haruka was) listed, maybe gambling terms of the time, and possibly era-specific things, but Kenzan required 0 knowledge of any Japanese history to enjoy it. I don't see why Ishin would need it either since they take massive liberties with the history to begin with and anything too obscure they outright explain it to you.

They've always been very inconsistent with Kiryu and Majima. They both looked very Asian in the first two games, but then started looking more mixed or racially ambiguous starting with 3/Kenzan. The very basic idea is to build a hand of four groups of three (Either in sequential order eg 1, 2, 3 of the same type of tile, or the same tile three times eg peacock 3,3,3) and then two of the same tiles of any kind. You want to stay away from Chi, Pon, and Kan if you can help it since they reveal your hand which drops your point gain significantly, and with every turn press square to see if you can Riichi. Pay attention to the enemy discard piles to make sure you're not building a hand that has a really low chance of resolving (For example, 2 and 4 of peacock are in your hand so you need a 3 of peacock but in the opponent's discards you notice three of them already thrown out). If you can, make sure you keep the dragon (Green kanji), whatever the red 中 symbol is called, or the white tile unless there's too many in the discards because they net you extra points if they're in your winning hand as a double or triple match. You can use the different winds (The different black Kanji) if you want but I usually pitch them since it's tough to make hands with them and they usually just fill up your hand.

When you call Riichi you can either Ron when someone discards a tile you need to win which turns your hand into an open one dropping the points you get but you win the hand and it takes points from the person you took the tile from, or you can hold out for a Tsumo which means you draw a tile that wins the round and gives you points from everyone.

The tiles in the center of the field are just Dora tiles which give you extra points if your hand contains one of the tiles shown there.

It's a pain in the ass and makes no sense at first, it took about eight hours to click for me but once it did it's really fun, just make sure you stick to the really low paying tables because the higher ones are ruthless and cheat with how often they Riichi. Koi Koi is the same kind of deal, I can play that game all day now.

Speaking of Yakuza 0, this game really brings out my inner perfectionist.
I mostly always handle the bosses well, but I get really annoyed if I fuck some parts of them up and get my ass kicked. Like even if I beat bosses pretty convincingly, if I run out of heat (I generally don't want to use items mid-fight since it feels cheap) and get knocked on the floor a couple of times in a row it really bugs me.

Munakata was basically in control of the Tojo clan and the police. The police were using dirty money to build prisons for Yakuza specifically that were off the books and putting Yakuza they needed killed or just out of the way into them. Munakata wanted to police to continue being higher than the Yakuza and keeping them in check by essentially threatening Daigo constantly and threatening far more crackdowns and raids on Yakuza-run businesses. The hit was to cause infighting between the Ueno Seiwa clan and Sasai's clan so that Katsuragi could come out of it nicely and rise up the ranks essentially being the right-hand man of Munakata in the Tojo clan.

The endgame money bit was to do two things: Draw out everyone who conspired in the plot with Munakata and to also draw out those in the Yakuza who needed the money. Daigo was there because the Tojo clan was falling to shambles due to infighting and his terrible leadership ever since 3. Kido was there to...I think it was something regarding a dream in the Tojo but I can't remember what the hell it was despite seeing it three times. I can't remember what Arai's goal was either, I think it was to also stay high in the ranks of the Tojo and run it his own way. Munakata was there because he needed the dossier that implicated corruption in the police and to also kill those who knew of all his cover ups, the money was just a bonus.

I'd say 3 is my least favorite so far but it's still fun, however the demo of 6 has me really worried about that one.

On my Ex-Hard and Normal runs I just handed him the Golden Pistol, that fight is awful.

Kenzan is a lost cause since the PS3 is basically done now in the west. You gotta hope our resident translation patch guy can manage to find a translator for the substories, items, hostesses, revelations, minigames, and story options not chosen in KHHSubs videos. Even if it did have a chance though there main story itself has child prostitution (Both from Haruka and the girls in the brothel Musashi visits) on top of substories having some of the girls trying to escape from them or trying to escape men harassing them. You also have one guy who tries to rape or at least molest Haruka before it gets broken up by I think Musashi. I'm not sure how that would fly over here just from the ESRB, let alone people having a fit.

Ishin is still up in the air but I wouldn't hold out hope. If it happens that's great but signs aren't really pointing to it being localized so far.

Everyone's said KHHSubs' text guide helps you understand the story and what you're doing so not all is lost. You even get stuff in the western release of Y0 if you have an Ishin save file which I thought was neat.

For those of you who played 4 did you also get a Gion Bell from the start for having save data from 3 or did it just hand you the Sunshin Belly Warmer?

I know what Kido did but he also talks about following his dream during the fight with Saejima which I have no recollection what his dream actually was. He just says he saw the money there and he had to take it while Saejima is preparing himself. Did Kido just want all the money?
