At least some kids' parents were generous enough to get them a decent building block set. My mom would only buy these tart candy Lego blocks that you couldn't build shit with because they wouldn't stick. I didn't like to eat them because they tasted like shit and were hard and jagged, but when you're out of candy and that's all that's in the bottom of the toy box, a kids gotta eat.

I mainly played with Legos, but I had a few Rokenbok sets too. Never got too into it because it was so expensive though. Always struck me as a toy for rich kids. They were fun though.

I thought the first wave with its traditional japanese looking dojo theme was cool, I don't keep close attention but I have a look through the sets occasionally and besides a few standout exceptions like >>376699589 they very rarely do buildings at all and focus more on vehicles. I'm sure it's because they're really serious about keeping ninjago as an established theme now and vehicles always sell better because kids love them so I can't really fault them for it in a way. Not like I'm their target demo or even buying any of it so my opinion doesn't really matter much at all

I had fun sploran in the beta but I've heard they fucked up the final release by suddenly adding some kind of campaign where you have to collect gold bricks just to increase the size your world's allowed to be, whereas in the beta there were no size limits at all

Is that true? Have they changed it back yet or are they sticking to what they've done? Because it sounds like that makes the final game a totally different experience to the beta and kind of shitty in comparison

There was this one knights set in the 2000's that had the big plastic ground piece divided in two with a bridge connecting. I made this Yu-Gi-Oh style game where two minifigs on opposite sides would summon stormtroopers and skeletons and shit to fight each other. I only ever played against myself and didn't write down any rules but I still had a basic outline in my head of what monsters were stronger and shit. Also had effects like playing the droid commander would special summon two droids or you could add bodyguards to someone to make the opponent kill the bodyguards before they could reach who they were protecting.

It got cancelled in the middle of its third year, I'd imagine due to poor sales
They were in the middle of a plot about their sensei getting captured and it was never resolved. Although one of the sets had the sensei in it so perhaps they wanted you as a kid to act out his escape instead of including it in the comics they were doing at the time. It's possible the third year was planned as a small fadeout from the start rather than an abrupt cancellation

To be honest, mega bloks have actually stepped up the quality quite considerably as of late thanks to Lego not updating their patents. There was a particular patent Lego had that pertained to how the blocks were made and the plastic used. They didn't update it and the process could now be used by any building block company so mega bloks jumped on board. Mega bloks also takes on popular properties that Lego refuses to touch because of their way too kid friendly policies so mega blocks has brb making more money as of late which they are able to put into improving their product. They still have work to do to improve but they're much better than they were several years ago.
