Is Evangelion actually any good? I read a synopsis, and the plot seemed pretty silly and pretentious. Seemed like baby's first religuous allegory. Not trying to shit on it. I haven't seen it, so I have no right to judge. But it seemed that way from what I've read

Lain and paranoia agent aren't really deconstructions of anything in general but they focus a lot on many of Eva's themes about other people and yourself, and relationships.

I definitely wouldn't say it's over-the-top "yeah you fucking retard this is about religion", you'd have to know a pretty decent amount about it to catch everything
As someone who's only watched a handful of anime's and also a sunday school teacher I definitely had to look up resources online to fully understand the importance of names and the like
I mean, I'm definitely biased to liking the hidden meanings but even on a surface level I enjoyed it as my first introduction to anything mecha-related

Remind me of two things:
Why did Joshua need a proxy again? Was it just to sabotage Megumi, because wasn't the game just that Megumi had to change Shibuya (or to show that it could change or whatever)
And did he pick Neku because if Neku could change anyone could, or was it purely with the intent of screwing Megumi

Honestly, the fact that its budget became literally nothing and that the EoE movie was kind of shitty. Anno going through his own creative breakdown was also pretty damn unhealthy for it all.

The others all lack those sorts of issues. I greatly prefer Bokurano as a deconstruciton of 'little kid pilots awesome giant robot' since it conveys its own themes way better.

I enjoyed these but they're not very faithful adaptations. I would say eva trumps them by virtue of being an original series and not an adaptation; so it doesn't run into the problems adaptations (particularly those two) suffer from. You could also at least stick to mecha, like Gasaraki or something. (Forgetting more obscure titles atm.)

Only a particular scene (in the Ant arc) is what I'd consider deconstruction. The most of is pretty straight with some twists. A straight deconstruction all the way through would be something like Medaka Box or Veritas.

I gotcha. Again, I haven't seen it, and the summaries I have read may have made the religious metaphors more apparent than the would be when actually watching the show. I think part of the reason I think it seems kind of ridiculous is because I find that most things touted as "deep" by as many people as Eva is so often are vapid(Westworld, Inception, Bioshock Infinite). Plus, religious symbolism isn't my thing. Growing up on Veggie Tales gave me my fill

Oh, I agree about HunterxHunter. I think it sowed the seeds for that arc earlier, but that is the only time it really goes the deconstruction route. I just often see that touted as a deconstructive work and find it overstated(though I do very much enjoy the series), so I was curious if you thought the same

Why wouldn't he be? He wanted to destroy Shibuya because he felt it was beyond saving didn't he? The outcome of his game with Megumi is either he goes ahead with his original plan, or the reason for him having that plan is no longer an issue. There was no way for Joshua to lose, it was his game after all.

I'm arguing that him entering Neku in the game and his interactions as his partner are, in a way, his attempts at making him a better person, which you said he wasn't trying to do. Joshua having a no lose situation is essentially him "trying" to change Neku, even if he would still have preferred a destroyed shinuya, which is what Hanekoma seems to suggest in im the secret ending

Since failure means erasure then all Megumi had to do to win was kill Neku, no matter how many times Joshua would force him to play the game. But I'm probably way off.

It was his handicap, he couldn't play Kitaniji's game himself (for obvious reasons as shown in gameplay). Instead he would get to pick someone to play for him, and struck gold with Neku.
I feel like he picked Neku because he more or less shared his mentality in regards to others (ie. I have myself so screw everyone). He did screw up Kitaniji during the game, right from the first day with giving Neku a second player pin and taking the memories of his death before being drafted into the game. Week 2 was basically Joshua trying to outcheat Kitaniji for looking for rule loopholes to make Neku lose

Come to think of it, Persona 5's Akechi did feel familiar for a reason, and I think Joshua is why

The very last thing he says to Neku before their final game is "remember what Mr. H told you" i.e. "trust your partner." He was asking Neku to trust him as they went into their final game, and because Neku was able to trust Joshua, despite having every reason not to, Joshua decided to spare Shibuya. I really don't think that Joshua actually wanted to destroy Shibuya. I'm sure that given his position that he loved the town more than anything, but he probably felt like he wouldn't have a choice if things didn't improve.

Basically, I think Josh set everything up deliberately to either force the town to change, or prove that it was beyond redemption, and Neku's personal growth was the litmus test to see which one it was.

The controls on the DS are completely ambidextrous (ABXY have the same function as the D-Pad, L and R have the same function, etc.) so you can hold the stylus with whichever hand you want.

That said, the iOS port is ok. The quality of the visuals and music are great, but the gameplay is severely simplified without the second screen and I personally don't like how they changed a lot of the timing for when/where certain songs play in the cutscenes.

I always thought Neku was more similar to Kitaniji if anything. It's a perfect example of the villain representing the hero's dark side. They both claim to love Shibuya but hate the "noise" of the town and wear headphones to block it out, they both see only their own views and reject any opposing ideas. The difference between them is that Neku is able to grow and realize that his views aren't the only valid ones and he takes his headphones off to let in Shibuya's noise. Kitaniji, on the other hand, does the exact opposite; he tries to force all of Shibuya into following his values, reducing the city's cacophony down to a single thought, and destroying the very thing that made the town special in the first place.
