I really loved Samurai Warriors 4 a while back, so I got SW4 Empires when it was on sale last week, and I fucking suck at it, I tried three times and lost my very first battle every time, on normal difficulty

Am I just garbage or does it start out rough? The first and second times I underestimated enemy officers and how hard it would be to find healing, and the third time everything seemed to be going fine until an enemy commander went right into my main camp while my officers were all doing who knows what

Seriously i'd like it better if instead they did 'Zones' like in Shadow of Mordor, and each "Zone" was a battlefield/fortress area. And they let you scout out places to position troops, prepare for battles and shit. Skirmish with bandits and enemy scouts before battles, and then fill it all with units

Nope I'm a veteran of the game, but even I know it doesn't require skill.

>>376691960
The challenge in most musou games comes from it turning into a forest-fire simulator at the higher difficulties.
You need to learn to recognize event flags (go to postion X, kill commanders(s) N, etc.) and trigger them ASAP.
Also realizing that the AI behaves differently and are actually useful when off-screen. Hence you need to balance event flags with rescuing them if they're in trouble.

>>
>>376692749
Yeah, but you've gotta weigh out whether you have time to go to B or not when you have like 2 other allies being fucked by mooks and enemy commanders at chokepoints.
It's more about risk/time management than anything.
Then if you pump up the difficulty to max, you have to deal with the AI's bullshit recovery, instagib-damage and super-armor.

DW's stages have always been semi-open worlds players would traverse in. Many games that go ow, have already been ow by "thought".
I know that it doesn't help when you prefer the "tight" design of everything being withing a couple of steps and deliberately placed.
But if Koei keeps their general design principles, then DW9s open world, would be nothing but removing the boarders.

Copy pasting all info here for lazy people:

Open World - Overall
The reason why the team decides to make DW9 as Open World is they're taking challenges to make new things because as of the last numbered title (DW8), the series is coming to a stale.
DW9's Open World system takes some references from Toukiden 2, but it won't be the exact same because the nature of Open World in each games are different.
They plan to reproduce the whole lands of China, but with a focus on livable territories, and a further focus on places where major battles took place like Hulao Gate or Zhongyuan (Central Plains, Guandu etc)
Time & Weather will be changing in real time. In nighttime and/or rain it will be harder for enemies to notice the player.

Open World - Cities
There will be over 10 major unique cities along with more generic towns & villages in the world map.
The major unique cities such as Luoyang won't be as big as they were actually, but each area will be about 1 kilometer square wide so they should still feel large.
Player can move into cities in the middle of battles.
Player should be also able to do purchases inside cities.

Open World - Transportation
The main method for land transportation is by riding a horse, but a Fast Travel feature that lets player warp to places already visited is also planned to be added. *NEW*
Swimming is confirmed returning from DW6. Player can also cross large rivers like Chang Jiang and Yellow River, although it may take about 5 minutes by swimming.
Boats are also available as a faster transportation method to cross rivers.
>>
Story Progression
Story mode is back to character-based (like pre-DW7), but the history progression is basically the same for each character (like pre-DW6).
There will be no What-If/Hypothetical branches that alter history here.
Story progression is based on eras (Yellow Turban Rebellion, Anti-Dong Zhuo Coalition, and so on).
There will be also conversation scenes based on Three Kingdoms events that can take place in the open world at each era. *NEW*
The starting & ending eras will depend on the selected character. For example if you choose Wang Yuanji she will start in an era later than where Zhao Yun would start at. *NEW*
Switching the player character in mid-game is currently still under consideration. Characters of the same era & faction (eg. Zhao Yun & Guan Yu) should have few problems to switch between, but the problem arises if the character is in a different era (eg. Zhao Yun to Jiang Wei) and also different faction (eg. Wang Yuanji) because they would have to re-introduce the new settings again. *NEW*
Discussions in the world map will be pertaining to that era. For example if you go to Nanman during Yellow Turban Rebellion era, you will hear Nanman people talking about Zhang Jiao.
Some features in the open world & cities will get upgraded through story progression to keep game balance from being broken by money (read: Not everything will be buyable by money) *NEW*
>>
>>376693919
>as of the last numbered title (DW8), the series is coming to a stale.
>as of the last title

NIGGER THEY BEEN MAKING THE SAME GAME FOR OVER A DECADE IT'S BEEN STAGNANT SINCE 4 OR 5
>>
Battles & Missions
Each era has a critical mission that must be cleared to advance the era. (eg. Defeat Zhang Jiao in YTR era to advance to Dong Zhuo era) *NEW*
The critical mission starts with having a high difficulty, but it can be lowered by clearing other regular missions related to the critical mission beforehand. *NEW*
An example of the application of Critical & Regular mission is as following in the Anti-Dong Zhuo Coalition era: *NEW*
-Critical Mission - Luoyang Riot (Allied Forces): Defeat Dong Zhuo in Luoyang
-Regular Mission - Hulao Gate Capture: Defeat Lu Bu in Hulao Gate
In this case, the player can head straight away to fight Dong Zhuo in Luoyang, but unless you cleared the Hulao Gate mission beforehand, Lu Bu might end up appearing at Luoyang too, hence the difference in mission difficulty.
Multiple battles may occur at the same time in different places, and the player will have to make a choice on which battle they want to participate in. They are no longer split by stages.
Player can capture castles in various ways other than the orthodox-from-castle-gate method. For example they can raid the castle from a higher elevation (eg. mountains), or do a stealth infiltration to hit the main target without getting noticed by other enemies.
Player can also take subquests unrelated to the main story missions to obtain rewards such as experience and money. *NEW*
Other examples of subquests include hunting wild animals with archery and battling against foreign tribes (eg. Shanyue) that have unique visuals.

A DW thread on /v/? call me surprised

Never thought I would see one on here

In any case I was surprised to hear them say it was being localized so early

You think they know its at least moderately popular outside of japan or do you think they want to spread the game as far as possible to recoup development costs?

Also all the voice actors have been great all this time but I hope so much that Zhang Liao is voiced by Roger Craig Smith again.

Timing got bad for him in dw8 xl and it was literally the only thing wrong or off with the game

State Combo
In the first interview, the team indicated that they are planning to revise the moveset system from what has been commonly known as Square for normal attacks and Triangle for charge attacks.
State Combo is the new moveset system that will change moves depending on the surrounding enemy situations.
State Combo is comprised of the following 3 attacks:
-Trigger attack: Begins the combo
-Flow attack: Combo that changes based on enemy situations
-Finish attack: Powerful attack that ends the combo
There are several types of Trigger attacks confirmed that will cause enemies to be as described: *NEW*
-Blowaway Trigger: Blows enemies away
-Juggle Trigger: Juggles enemies to the air
-Toppling Trigger: Topples enemies down to ground
Variations of Flow attacks are also confirmed: *NEW*
-Drive Flow: Attacks that pursue enemies that were blown away
-Aerial Flow: Character jumps to unleash aerial attacks on enemies mid-air
A couple of State Combo examples: *NEW*
-Blowaway Trigger → Drive Flow
-Juggle Trigger → Aerial Flow

Interactive Action
Actions will change depending on the surrounding terrains and objects.
For example, player will be able to use field objects to attack (such as catapults)
Player can also use grapple hook to climb castle walls and high mountains.
Player can utilize oil cans in field to cause explosions by shooting them with an arrow from far away.

Other Action Revisions & Additions
The team has indicated that they want to keep some other systems like Musou attack to retain the exhilarating feel of one-vs-thousand
(Note: In DW8, all characters have 1st Musou, 2nd Musou, Aerial Musou and Awakening Musou)
Archery mode from DW5 & before is returning & usable for all characters. It also lets the player to snipe enemies from afar.
However rather than FPS from DW5 & before, Archery mode in DW9 seems to use TPS (third-person shooting) view just like in Nioh. *NEW*
It's implied that the free weapon system from DW7-8 will be returning, where characters can equip any weapon types but equipping their main weapon type will allow exclusive moves. *NEW*
(However it's still unknown if the weapon switch system will also return or not)

Miscellaneous
On 31 March 2017, Producer Suzuki held a poll on Twitter asking if the fans prefer Liu Bei with mustache or not. The poll ended with the mustache winning 67% of the votes.
Producer Suzuki also said to use the poll comments as reference, in which many are suggesting both versions of Liu Bei (young without mustache & older with mustache) to appear in DW9, just like in SW: Spirit of Sanada.
Character models are being reworked from scratch to fit PS4-grade graphic standards.
Characters' new costumes in DW9 will have a tendency of getting less flashier and more geared towards realistic based on the costumes in Three Kingdoms era.
Character models are to be made much closer like real human, but not too realistic because otherwise their images would end up becoming too different from past series.

Combat system changes seems iffy. Making all attacks context-based sounds retarded.

I really can't see how open world benefits a game like DW. I don't understand how proper mission design, strategies and managing the flow of the whole army will work without defined stages.

Story progression makes it sound like it'll be really easy to skip large parts by just rushing the main mission in each era. Even if it's difficult (read: enemy health/damage inflated out the ass) it'll probably still be doable.

At least we're finally getting Cheng Pu and Liu Bei's mustache back.

I think you might be confusing "open world" for Bethesda style "you can go ANYWHERE" approach. Even if that was Omega's intent China is too big for that so you'll most likely get some big open maps to wander through while important missions are separate on their own maps precisely becuase you need tighter scenario control.

But what purpose does removing the borders serve? It essentially just means you're running between stages instead of selecting them from a menu which might sound neat but gets old fucking quick. The games are split into missions so that the gameplay is controlled and delivered in a way that lets you have fun. Preset missions let you design a battle flow that the player can move with, keeping the combat gameplay flowing while still allowing for objectives and strategies. Taking an "open" approach just doesn't really make sense for the series.

>But what purpose does removing the borders serve?
>Taking an "open" approach just doesn't really make sense for the series.
Yes it does because it enables connectivity, more interactivity and allowes for generally larger battlefields which would be more realistic. You could now take a unit and ride all the way around the enemy for example. Deploy actual tactics.
Not to mention that many people like what you call "running between stages" due to the immersion it provides, as opposed to going by menues. I mean yeah if you prefer the arcade style of this obviously arcade game, then it sounds like a stupid idea. But don't be surprised when many welcome the change.
>>
>>376694934
What's the point of an open world if it's just a glorified stage selector?

Open worlds should only be used for games with a focus on exploration or which have an objective structure that supports the openness (i.e. the gameplay uses the entire world instead of just pockets of it that you travel between). It definitely doesn't make sense for a series which focuses on semi-historical battles at specific locations. The fuck is up with the "hunting sidequest" stuff too? That's the last sort of thing I expect to be doing in DW.

Maybe the open world would work for an Empires style game where the objective is to personally command armies and conquer territory, but for story mode it sounds like a bad idea.

>>
>>376695113
Have you played Toukiden 2? I think that was OF's first open world and it is complete fucking dogshit. There's no point in having it at all. It's just an excuse to run around before you get to do the exact same gameplay you do in the mission based design. They're just doing it because it's the current fad, not because it adds anything to the game.
>>
>>376695453
>(i.e. the gameplay uses the entire world instead of just pockets of it that you travel between). It definitely doesn't make sense for a series which focuses on semi-historical battles at specific locations
I think thats exactly what they're changing though. Instead of stages that vaguely resemble their historical counterparts, we now get the actual enviroments(or at least get much closer to it) with an open setting that allows for more tactical and different approaches.

I get what you're saying about story mode though. The battle of XY was the battle of XY and not the battle of "let me just walk over here real quick"

Yes, but when you remember how combat is braindead square-square-triangle now, I think literally anything will be better if they don't fuck it up horribly somehow and make it even worse.
>>
>>376695585
Toukiden 2's open world is a huge improvement over teleporting you into an area to fight big guy.

It's not skyrim tier but makes for better presentation and it's nice to look at and explore.
>>
>>376696465
I'm actually glad the "what if" shit is gone. But what you say is true about those characters. But I think the open world setting will (hopefully) counter that by giving you tons of things to do. And since its based on Eras(clear the main mission, advance to a different era) you can probably go back to a previous era to clear side objectives do other things in the world with that character
>>
>>376696341
It cuts a lot of the smaller battles out and they're just mentioned as happening offscreen. Biggest omission is everything after Sima Yi's coup though. Which is probably for the best since it kind of stops being interesting when all the heroes die off.

All those new musous, new weapons and new characters made the gameplay a lot more fun.

Personally I've always liked the hypothetical stuff. Most of my best memories of this series are how stupid the cutscenes are in DW3/4 by bringing the wrong characters into a mission.

I expect if this formula is successful they'll reintroduce that stuff in the next game though.
>>
>>376696496
"Ravages of Time Eng" is the group currently translating it. You can find it on various manga hosters. The last chapter was only a week ago. The older stuff is still in low quality though, but if you can pull through that then it gets better.

>>
>>376696570
Quite the contrary, it's a massive downgrade that adds nothing but like an hour of senseless running to the game overall instead of letting you do the actual goddamn gameplay. How is it nice to explore? What do you get out of exploration?

Traversal is the key. Every open world that is good, has great means of traversal. Witcher 3 for example. In which your horse would automatically stick to the paths and that often gave you "lets go there now" or "I'm gonna go there on my own" options.

No, problem with DW6 was that it was their attempt to curb the growing number of characters by unifying as many as possible under shared movesets and players freaked out over it. Just like with the upcoming game DW6 was also responsible for giving the characters a facelift for the new generation.

There's a big difference between using a shield breaking combo, or a move made for crowd control, or a feint to get behind the enemy send him flying and juggle him with the crowd control move. If you know well your weapon, you can pull of cuhrazee combos of upwards 100 hits on one enemy officers or infinitely on trash mobs.

They're gonna reuse all animations with a new couple of gimmicks and add few characters so they don't have to clone and get a big backslash like what happened with DW6-7, all that with an open world spin.

The newer DW titles don't have that sense of preparation anymore, your gauge builds with one combo now.
>>
>>376700683
Yeah, by that logic you can pretend every DW is practically a reboot compared to the one before it but I doubt most people would agree.

Story progression is barely changed. You beat a mission, then you get a new mission. It's all completely linear and scripted. You have X amount of missions, and any given character can access X - the years they were inactive. It's like DW4's story mode, except DW4 didn't lock characters out and now instead of picking it in a menu, you ride to it on a large ass map. Every musou I played had contextual interactive actions like ladders, trebuchets, or shortcuts on the map you could jump to or climb. Ninjas had infiltration shit in SW2. You could even control vehicles (these rolling tiger carvings that spit fire and elephants) These changes are always expected. To call it a borderline reboot because of it? Nah.
>>
>>376701353
I'm sorry but you just did as I said: trivialize changes.

I started with Basara 3 so I was kind of disappointed Lu Bu was just overinflated stats instead of a rapemode AI that fully utilizes it's moveset to rip you a new one. I mean, Tadakatsu shows up, starts pursuing me, I can take on that nigger, he has superarmor, his first combo takes 3/4 of my healthbar, I start running and he uses his cannons to shoot me in the back, horee sheyyyt.
I face Lu Bu, he blocks my attacks and kills me in two hits, that's it?

They stated that there is one main mission you have to clear to advance but, duh? Thats a no brainer.

Read it again, because it literally says "clearing other missions related to the main mission"
Also "Multiple battles may occur at the same time in different places, and the player will haveto make a choice on which battle they want to participate in. They are no longer split by stages.
I'm sorry but please stop trivializing changes.
We also know nothing about how the story will progress. Clearing a mission could leave you with the next mission being a character coming to you and say "lets ride to XY together", while there's dialogue along the way, and maybe an abush.

Point is, since the start, stop trivializing changes you know nothing about. Its silly.

>Thats a no brainer.
No. They could have several missions that take you to different branches and what if scenarios. THEN the progression would be different. As it is it's just old musou with boring open world shit inbetween the missions.
>but you can play unbordered free battles in places that don't matter
>or play some optional mission that removes an enemy officer or adds an ally to you in the main mission
>or you'll need to talk to an NPC before you can actually play
Yeah, exciting. Musou revitalized. It's your wishful thinking that plays up these trivial changes to be some magnificent reboot when everything we've seen from Omega Force and musou points to the contrary.
>>
>>376701642
>Lu Bu was just overinflated stats instead of a rapemode AI that fully utilizes it's moveset to rip you a new one
Have you played the earlier ones like 3 or 4? Because Lu Bu would use all of his moves to beat you, especially if you were on even ground.

You blocked his attacks so as soon your about to start your attack, he would either block, counter with a quick jump hit, or even counter your counter with a random musou. That was the cool thing about Lu Bu, you could fight again after you've leveled up your character and he'd still be tough challenge. This is opposed to other generals who are on the same level yet just seem to be only able to block and strike.

They never say that you mongoloid. They state that there is one main mission to advance the era. But they never state how that objective is structured in individual missions exactly. Its also obvious that its the last objective, because it actually advances the era. Like a military campaign goal. But it has nothing to do with individual main mission structure.
Quote: (Defeat Zhang Jiao to advance to Dong Zhuo era)
Like seriously, how fucking stupid do you actually have to be?
>>
>>376704018
Are you actually retarded? They literally explain all the optional battles take place around the landmarks like Fan Castle and Nanban and happen when those places aren't the main mission. The fact you approach from an open world doesn't stop them from being stages.

There hasn't been a dubbed Musou for years now, only big projects like Hiryule Warriors funded by Nintendo and Dragon Quest Heroes funded by Squeenix were the exception, everything else, more than 8 Musous were all without a dub track; Koei said it was the best way to keep more Musous being localized, cuting costs and purging a dub was one measure.
