The DS had shit like Elite Beat Agents, TWEWY, Hotel Dusk, Etrian Odyssey, 999, and a bunch of other shit that actually innovated. The 3DS's library is a bunch of sequels and rehashes. Everyone who thinks that the 3DS has a good library of games should kill themselves.

the common theme to your list is that they all use primarily 2D assets. Small companies had the freedom to be experimental with their games on DS because the resolution was very low and the hardware weak enough to justify using 2D and extremely low fidelity 3D graphics, making the DS cheap to develop for. Since development costs are higher on 3DS, it's the same as video games have been on consoles for over a decade now: mostly ports and established concepts.

Basically, you're never going to get a handheld or console that has big library of games based on new and unique ideas, so suck it up or play indie games on PC.

1's perfectly skippable; even if you like the cast (which is likely because they included people like Frank West and Arthur) it's advised that you just watch a playthrough on YT. The first game is just more of a slog to get through due to endless reinforcements and shitty resource systems.

2 fixes all the gameplay issues of the first and has top-tier dialog to boot. There should still be a demo on the eShop if you want an idea of what the gameplay's like.

The 3DS is weak as fuck and has the same resolution as the DS. With the 2D the cost of creation stays the same no matter what kind of platform and how small the resolution is. But with 3D the costs to create them are extremely small the lower polly the models become. Hell, I would argue that they put the same effort into the models with DS and 3DS games, they just don't need to downsample this shit on 3DS as much as with DS.

Honestly you can skip the first one due to the massive gameplay improvements in two, story wise you aren't missing out on much.
But they play like strategy rpgs but with characters from a ton of different series, you set them up in pairs and head out to kill enemies or reach different objectives.

Instead of your standard turn based combat, you input combos and chain together attacks kind of like in the tales of phantasia games.

I honestly forgot about Kid Icarus. The main issue with that game is that its arguable whether it was actually improved by being on the 3ds rather than just being on a console. You certainly can aim more precisely when using the stylus but it also came at the cost of being really fucking uncomfortable.

Hotel Dusk is just some text adventure same as 999. Escape the room puzzles are not unique at all.Etrian Odyssey is literally just a dungeon crawler with a weeb skin over it, the build in mapping is new but it's just a casual version of the old school mapping.

Probably SMTIV Apocalypse.
According to my 3DS I have 163 hours in that game and it felt like half that cuz I was having so much fun.
Didnt even do the DLC stuff yet or even a second playthrough.

Only game I have more hours is MH4U with 217h but that I played with friends so it doesnt count.

IV is a boring slog past Tokyo. The bosses aren't well designed and nothing is a real challenge. Also finding your way around the Tokyo map, especially the shit hole that is Infernal Tokyo, is obnoxious.

You can just skip to IVA, there are MASSIVE improvements to the gameplay. Balance is much better (smirk is no longer contently busted), bosses are now designed to fight the buff/debuff war with you and all of them pose a real threat. Honestly, nothing else in all of SMT comes close to how well the gameplay in IVA was done.

I have like 1300 hours on 3U, and another 600 or so hours on 4U.

You could shave off 150-200 hours off, since me and my friends would often leave our 3DS's on when they went for smoke breaks, or we took a break to get dinner going, as is our hunting tradition.

For a game that me and my friends all bought on a whim just because one wanted a WiiU game that we could all co-op in, it destroyed my life that entire first year, and missed out a lot of other games and actually build a 'backlog' that I am only recently recovering from.
