Adventure had tight controls
Boost games basically modify your inputs to the point you're not even playing the game anymore. it plays itself

Even if Adventure wasn't perfect, it is still better than the current pseudo-gameplay that's been going with Modern Sonic.

Sonic was really good but the game is based around going fast so it dosn't have as much variety compared to Donkey Kong Country.

Oh come on OP. I can almost forgive you for getting your "it punishes you for going fast" shtick from Previously Recorded (or if not from them, then from some anon parroting them) but this doesn't even make sense.

You go right. With the exception of like one or two act in each Sonic game, you just go right. It's the easiest fucking thing. Sonic 1 was middle of the road.

Sonic 2 was down right great

Sonic 3 was great as well, slap & Knuckles on top of that and you have something truly stellar

Adventure 1 and 2 are great imho, but I get people not liking them because they came with a host of mechanics that would eventually overtake all other aspects of the games (boost to the finish).

Heroes was fine.

Shadow actually had its moments, but nothing was going to overcome the terrible edgyness of it all.

06 was 06. It was a victim of circumstances beyond its control, still and awful game though (except that OST).

Colors was alright.

Unleashed was half decent.

Never Played lost world but It didn't look great.

We all know how Boom turned out.

All the Story Book Wii games are awful.

Sonic Advance 1-3 are pretty fucking good.

We don't talk about Sonic 4.

Never played...Rush was it? The DS one.

I heard Fire and Ice for the 3DS was actually ok.

Any series that has been around as long as Sonic and releases as many games is going to have its ups and downs.

Actually there's a lot more moments in Sonic games where you go left for a little bit. But it's never done in a way to make anything confusing, and if you actually get lost then there's something very wrong with you because if you somehow ignore the blatant level design then sooner rather than later you'll hit a pretty clear clue that points you in the right direction.

I agree with this in principle but in reality we have the mario and kirby series, particularly kirby, which consistently release good games

I'm a fan of the games but I think it's true. Sonic's entire existence was purely to compete with Mario, not because Sega wanted to make a really inspired game. They just wanted a mascot.

SEGA kept trying to radicalize his design to stay relevant whereas Mario stayed the same for years and people love the shit out of him.

Nah, it was. I started to think the same for a while, and then went back and played the old ones again. They still hold up in my opinion.

The problem is that Sonic is the sort of thing that gets really stupid when you think too much about the premise. The old games avoid this by limiting the story to pantomiming, and favoring gameplay over everything else. The newer ones take themselves too seriously and try to build a story around the concept of a blue hedgehog saving animals (or aliens or whatever) from a guy that makes robots, which is pretty stupid when you think about it for more than a minute. Sonic stops being a mascot with a little bit of attitude and becomes ridiculous furry fodder. The series was at its best when it was just an answer to Mario with a different kind of physics and a little more attitude.

Have to disagree.

When you think about it its basically an appreciation for nature and life Vs Rampant industrialization an pollution.
Sonic and Robotnik's fights have always symbolized that and you see it in the level progression in most of the older games (especially 2, 3, and CD.). But you're right the New ones went way off track with his interacting with humans and getting into dumb sitcom-esqe situations. Somewhere along the line it went from ''protect nature'' to ''save the world from ancient evil".
