However, instead of a purely lineage-based system, Wutai's inheritance instead apparently follows whoever can beat that pagoda thing, which is apparently hard. Now, if that cousin also beat the pagoda, there might be some contention, but since it basically takes the combined loot of a party a bit over of a third of the way to saving the world to get someone to win said pagoda challenge, it's unlikely that some nobody could take it, especially since the party already nicked all the good, world-ending materia that was just laying around.

Aeris is the most three dimensional character in the game. The party is a lot less interesting after she's gone.

Tifa is blank slate. She really doesn't have much of a personality and her slapfight with Scarlet is the only notable thing she does that doesn't involve Cloud.

Yuffie is an annoying brat but she does grow to actually care about the group by the end. Being an optional character limits her characterization, unfortunately.
