Just think what you want your character to do, since theres..12? Itheir pretty streamlined. Attack, Speed, Shield or Evade, and HP for Melee units and Mind, Sapphire, for casters.

Balanced characters are shit at both instead of being great at one.

You don't really need to configure everyone super specifically, especially if you're playing on normal. I had one dedicated healer/buffer with Athelas, Tearal/Tear-All, La Teara/La Teral, Clock Up EX and Earth Wall and one offensive caster with some of the stronger arts.

For melee characters just give them stuff that boosts their stats the way you want them, they're probably never gonna cast anyway (Except maybe a random Tearal if things go really poorly).

Depends on the unit comp's crafts and what I'm fighting against.

I had one dedicated Arts user who I pumped up with all kinds of ATS boosts, the others occasionally used buff spells or heals. Maybe an effective art if the enemy had a weakness or was resistant to physical.

Kevin I had with CP generating items, but I also tended to use him as a caster more than physical, since every craft he uses is slightly less Grail Sphere.

You can do some cute things with arts.
Zodiac is very useful, debufs can makes some fights much easier, you can potentially lockdown enemies from ever getting to you with petrosphere that's how I beat Loewe in SC.
In 3rd a lot of the end game and especially arena bosses are fucking immune to everything so debuffs kinda become useless but you can still invalidate entire boss fights with something like Genesic barrier, making the boss waste turns casting useless stuff.

So, i just started the 3rd. Got past the prologue, but i want to ask something.

I played both FC and SC on normal, since i like going through at the "normal" stats and see how it is, and some fights still provided a nice enough challenge, but nothing never really fucked me over aside from Loewe and that bullshit fight in the Glorious in chapter 6 againt the 4 Jeagers and Gilbert.

So i started it on hard, seeing as i'm not a masochist to go on nightmare on a NG+ run. It was fine enough, Gilbert and his robot doing around 2000-3100 damage. So i'm wondering, is Hard fine for the third? or is there going to be some bullshit moment where it goes super retarded on the difficulty?

No fight in any trails game should be very hard unless you are underleveled and/or on higher difficulty levels. Playing on normal difficulty, I don't think I've ever even had to use an item except in some of 3rd's 1v1 fights.

Like someone else mentioned, it seems like you are a little low level for the fight. If you don't want to grind, make use of arts and Earth Wall spam. Earth Wall can make even nightmare a joke. Also try to enter with 200 cp on everyone. This alone can make most fights a breeze.

I think the generally accepted top tier for 3rd are Richard, Renne, Tita, Kevin, Joshua, and Kloe.

Anelace gets special mention because of her weapon that lets her be a monster midgame. Olivier is close to top tier, but he's not as good as Renne or Kloe. Renne is the best if you want all the arts while Kloe's insane ATS means her art choices don't really matter.
