Well, they ended up getting billed as a direct competitor to Overwatch, despite their games having very little in common with each other. Blizzard's marketing campaign was far beyond anything they could possibly do, so already that meant people were leaning away from it. Then, Overwatch had a free weekend during Battleborn's launch, which hurt. The launch itself included a lot of technical issues that made the game unplayable even on high-end computers, but they insisted on keeping the PC and console patch schedules the same, so those issues didn't get fixed for a full month. Then they tried to have a massive sale, but that just pissed off the people who'd paid full price. Then they tried microtransactions for cosmetics, but that just looked like a cash grab and pissed off the season pass holders, who still hadn't gotten anything. And the actual season pass content took so long for them to start releasing that by the time they added new story operations and stuff, no one cared anymore.

Also, some people didn't like the dialogue and character designs.

I think Evolve (also published by Take-Two) going free-to-pay but only receiving a small boost in popularity for a very short time stopped Battleborn using the same model.

Take-Two realized that any more money invested in "converting" the game to f2p and promoting that fact would be tantamount to throwing their money into a furnace.

No. I am playing virtual console games and am far more engaged with all of them than I would Battleborn. It looks messy, gameplay looks subpar and the visuals just wreck my head.

I'll stick to my Gameboy tier games.

I'm an artfag and game design student myself and on just about every level character-design wise this thing is a mess. I remember someone posting that the team was split up into groups that were allowed to design their own hero and whther or not this is true it at least looks like it and thats easily the dumbest thing you can do eaither way, because all of the characters look like sole protagonists from their own game thrown into one title ,none of them share any common theme or factor that ties them together, its a mess of colors and direction. Secondly, the proportions are fucked on half the cast, even allowing for cartoony styles. Third and perhaps most damning of all, the animation just fucking sucks ass. Someone will probably post that webm of the sniper rifle zoom in and almost everyone that watches it(myself included) literally feels physical pain in their eyeballs when watching it. Say what you want about TF2 or how its progressed but from a pure game design standpoint its technically flawless, the characters share a common color scheme and style but are easily recognizable, to the point that they don't even have to have names and teams hovering over everyone's head, which I think is a sign of good design. Also Battleborns' UI sucks fucking ass.
