it completely cratered in Japan.

They apparently took out all the actiony gameplay and stripping mechanics and turned it into a boring, bog-standard basic jRPG which failed to appeal to a wider audience and spurned the audience it did have. A classic blunders of publisher meddling with a series and ending up blowing it the fuck out.

I played the JP Demo a while back, so while I can't speak for the story or characters, the gameplay was pretty eh. It's literally the Tales of battle system and didn't even try to do anything unique, but maybe because it was a demo not all the combat options were available yet or something. Most of the battles in the demo were just combo your normal attack 3-4 times and then finish with a special move. Then step back before the enemy counterattacks and repeat. Again it was just a demo, so maybe combat gets more exciting once you unlock more specials and have other party members with you.

I can say the visuals were pretty decent though and it ran at a solid FPS.

Akiba's Strip wasn't even very good. The combat was incredibly clunky and garbage and my hitboxes were constantly disappearing so I'd get locked into a special attack with a long animation while enemies could beat me to death.

But I absolutely loved being able to choose which stupid gimmick bullshit I was going to use. I had a really fun time trapping it up and fighting people with glowstick wolverine claws. I loved collecting animation sets or doing the battle tournament to get silly reference finishing attacks.

It's a big shame they ditched anything interesting in favor of having you run through Persona 4 dungeons and with bad Tales of Symphonia combat.

It looks like a poor man's Tales of game and without the stripping gimmick it's hard to want it. It's a bit too niche

XSeed probably could have made some profit off of it since Undead and Undressed sold decently well. The problem is they spent a fuckload of money on VAs for this for some ungodly reason, which means it has to be a hit or else they put themselves in the hole big time.
