I get that Tales of have shitty shonen clichéd characters so you want to get rid of them, fine. But why the hell would you want the setting and characters from Zelda ?? Zelda games have a lot of qualities but fuck, setting and characters are not.

Plus Zelda plots are already similar to RPGs so it's not like there would be that much of a difference.

I like Symphonia for most of its dungeon design because it's much more clever than the games that follow it. But the combat leaves something to be desired, for sure. Vesperia or Xillia 1 minus the linking and weakness focus would be better.

I'd like a Zelda JRPG. I think that the setting(s) have potential. As others have said, look at the Mario RPGs, or Paper Mario. I think that a Zelda RPG would be fun, especially if it's a spin-off using characters that aren't Link or Zelda, though they might be mentioned in it.

An anon in a different thread mentioned a Zelda SRPG, and I have to agree, making with some base-building a la PKMN Conquest.

Zelda has a lot of spin-off potential, but Nintendo is only opening up to the idea of such a thing now. Pic related. Nintendo is understandably averse to advertising Smash Bros as a competitive game, it's not exactly a realistic idea, but I thought designating a specific franchise of theirs to a competitive Smash experience would be neat.

I've had this idea for some time

That would be cool, but might get somewhat tedious by people who like one kind of gameplay over another. Think about how many people bitched about the wolf Link segments in TP (I'm one of the few people who liked them).

By contrast, having a separate strategy (whether srpg or grand strategy) game focusing on rebuilding the city and such as you said would allow players in it for the strategic elements to enjoy that sort of game without worrying about muddling it up with arpg gameplay they might not enjoy.

Though I guess you could have something like Fire Emblem Gaiden. That'd be pretty fun, yeah. Maybe have it something like time-based, a la Persona or some such, where you have strategic base building day and turn-based combat by day and also have an option to enter dungeons each day as Link.

I haven't played Stronghold; what's that like?

I have no doubt that they'd be able to make unique move sets for FE characters, but I can't help but think there would be inevitable complaints over similar characters when they're obligated to bring in all the main lords. We already got a bunch of bizarre "sword fighter" complaints for Smash 4 even though most of them were different.

There are three franchises that could carry a spinoff like this.
>Pokemon, which already has a fighting game.
>Mario, which would be more likely to cause brand confusion with normal Smash Bros
>Zelda
Zelda has enough characters for a 20 or so starting roster. The roster size shouldn't start out at Smash's currently insane level if they were, in this scenario, going for a more tightly focused competitive experience. You could probably get over half the roster drawing from Breath of the Wild only.

Would be great so long as we don't have to play as Linky.

I love it (the first few games, the newer ones are shit)
Basically it's both an RTS and a city builder/manager.
Some missions require you to build walls to defend yourself or to crreate armies to attack the enemy, while other missions are simply about making your town rich and prosperous, gathering resources, making your citizens happy etc.
