Redpill me on shield man. How do I get good at him?

Shield less, hammer more.
Even better if you get a mercy to power you up so you can kill shit with 2 swings.
Pin anyone who gets cocky and stand in front of you and firestrike once in a while.

If the enemy rein has shatter, don't drop your shield.
Shatter the enemy team

Don't use shift.

Don't just hold up your shield the whole game, let it recharge by dropping it when there's no shooting, use ult when enemy team pushes/your team pushes

Charge the enemy Reinhardt as soon as you see him.

Stay with your team and hold right click.

Q when the enemy is grouped. Congrats you are now diamond.

To summarize what everyone said.

Keep your shield up 80% of the time only swing at them if they either have broken your defense and you cant block damage for your team or if you are surrounded so you can hit multiple squishies at once

Only use shift when your frontline is broken/your shield is down or you can fuck over the enemy reinhardt so your team gets a free line of fire

Try to outsmart the other reinhardt with eartshatter. Never earthshatter when his shield is up. You can try to bait enemy earthshatters by lowering your shield and then put it up again

The safest bet is to only earthshatter when the enemy reins shield is broken.

In a game full of braindead kits on training wheels, Reinhardt's is the simplest and most utilitarian.

Keep shield up, protect allies so they can shoot at things from behind the safety of the shield and poke away at the enemy.

Get them through the chokes. Reinhardt is basically the most efficient way to counter OW's terrible maps.

If it's "safe" scare people off with firestrike.

Then once everybody's ultimates are ready and the time is right, press Q and pray to god in the clusterfuck of everybody activating their ultimates, your team makes it through slightly more intact.

Try to drop your shield right before it actually breaks instead of letting it hit 0, if it actually breaks there's a cooldown before it recharges and can be used again

adding to what this anon said, you can "sort of" ani-cancel your regular attack using your shield in the middle of the attack, making it like you used firestrike to lure the other rein into using earthshatter

One of the downsides of firestrike is that you can't cancel it, make you very vulnerable to any attack coming at you, including earthshatter. So, use that at your advantage when you're trying to fool the other rein

If you died and your team is midfight and you walk back to the fight you can make long charges around corners in the hope that you wreck someone when you arrive

do not let your shield break, if you do you will not be able to shield until the barrier recharges above 500. instead drop shield when it's low and allow to recharge

Just focus on pinning whenever it's possible (SECURING A PICK, THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART), and hammer down at certain occations then you'll do fine
