If your having trouble with metal sonic specifically try this trick. As he comes down position sonic on the front half of his body where the spikes dont reach. Then just jump and you can hit him a bunch of times before he actually starts attacking. He will dash across the screen, then just do it again and he will die.

For the death egg robot there isnt really much to it other than know the pattern. Dodge the hands by going out of their range, never go behind him when he jumps or he will scatter bombs behind him. One big tip I can give is that you dont have to wait for him to jump to hit him. You can hit him while hes walking, you just need to time it right so you hit the belly without hitting the hands. Do that and the fighr should be over in less than 2 minutes.

I actually never used the reset button on my console because it broke for some reason, but that is pretty amazing.

Also, there are enough checkpoints to get all emeralds in the first zone, so i really never had any problems getting super sonic.

It's not so much that it's a problem as much as it's just kind of tedious to hunt for the additional Star Posts and get 50 more rings.
Plus you can get it done in one act like that.
