Realism is a bonus but it not at the sake of style or gameplay.
Furthermore every gun should have a use and be effective, if you make a really good gun but it takes 30 shots to kill anything it won't feel very fun to use.

Haven't played it in a while but FEAR is the one I remember most. Every bullet felt like an event because of all of the dust, parallax decals, sparks and particles, and the way the game had tons of dynamic lights and physical clutter that'd react to being shot.

Don't think so, Activision would have to be stupid to not realize Destiny has the potential to be really big on PC. Borderlands 2 maintains a large playerbase to this day, the Division sold a ton even if it died instantly because of how shit it was.

For what its worth in their recent quarterly investor call they claimed it was going to be a high effort port with all the advanced features people expect on PC. If it was an afterthought for them I don't think they would bother bringing it up.

NuDoom's gunplay is great but it sure as fuck isn't because of that thing in turret mode. What IS great is switching between the rocket launcher, HMG, plasma gun and shotgun and their two mods, fully upgradable and with the dex tree maxed.

But the game gives you very little opportunity to do so before throwing enemies that just have health so high you need to use the upgraded version.

Metro was incredibly fun on the hardest difficulties. I used to keep a Modded shotgun and modded Revolver with me at all times, but if I didn't want to waste bullets I'd find another weapon and use that.

It was a shame that you could cheat your way out of dying from lack of oxygen by just switching you filters on and off. Used to do that all the time when there were no enemies.

The secret karma was annoying though, even in my third playthrough where I did everything I could that would've been considered good, I still got the bad end.

McCree is a gunslinger right down to his ult being deadeye from every western shooter ever. 76 is a modern military protag with the rifle/underbarrel/sprint/regen health. The reload animations made me preorder the game. I've put some hours into the alpha/beta and it's got a lot of potential.

I tried a multiplayer match with a friend the other day, it was bizarre. We spawned in Factory super far away from eachother, and a bunch of people running around between us. We couldn't meet up, and we couldn't tell if we were fighting other bots, humans, or both. He got cornered and killed eventually, and I managed to make it out with an AK and a Saiga from just a pistol start.
I really want to play this game, and I really want to just play it co-op against AI. I hope there's more focus on that down the line.

Gunplay for me isnt about superficial aspects. What makes gunplay fun is managing weapon mechanics and enemy mechanics together. My favorite gunplay in vidya hands down is DOOM and Serious Sam Fusion (cheating because it has both encounters in it kek). And you ever get that feeling where you love every little thing about each gun and could endlessly use them? Thats how I feel about these games. Except for the pistols, both games have shitty pistols.

Look, I understand that a lot of people did not like SW2 because I guess the number of people who actually enjoy spending 5+ minutes between misissions tweaking and optimizing builds, but this is just flat out wrong.
Impact of a weapon on an enemy is purely based on proportionality between damage and enemy total health pool. If a single shot deals more than 15+%, of the enemy total health pool, they stat to react VERY noticeably, if it deals above 40%, entire chunks of enemies can fly off.

And the fact that you though the enemies have too much health is because you suck at the game. And again, I kinda understand that you did not even want to bother with the actual weapon-setup thing: but don't LIE about the game. Your weapons were shit, you chose the bad one, your aim sucked, you did not use the god-damn upgrades well, that is why you were tickling the enemies.
But it's not a problem of the game, it's problem of you not knowing how to play it, or not wanting to play it.

But I don't think it's just that. Most people had these problems even on you got Wang.

Look, here is the BIGGEST problem of SW2. It's not the only issue, but it's what I think hurt the game the most.
It's bad at explaining itself. In fact, it does not explain jack-shit. The weird thing about it is that it's actually surprisingly intrictate and complex for a shooter (without ever sacrificing even a bit of the skill element, which is really rare and really admirable). But it does a poor job of explaining the mechanics to the player.

A LOT of the game is derived from your weapon-upgrade builds. Unlike say, borderlands, it's not the level of upgrades that matter, but the way they are used - not even in individual weapons, but in your entire loadout. SW2 is a 40% a game about ARSENAL building. It's about creating a set of specialized tools (different types of weapons will benefit from entirely different upgrade setups) and consistently switching between them mid-combat, taking advantages of possible synergies. It's not about having as strong gun as possible: it's about having multiple guns with specialized uses whose potential is maxed out and then using all of them at the right time in the right way.

It's AMAZING how much that changes things. And it's quite amazing how the whole "optimization of arsenal" DIRECTLY FEEDS into the skill-aspect of the game (your aim, priority target, weapon-switching, movement) without either of the sides compromising themselves. In this regard, it's actually fantasticly designed game.

But the problem is that you have to figure all of this on your own.

If you don't want to tweak weapons - play on low difficulty. I am talking about Shadow Warrior 2. And don't attack fire resistant enemy with fire weapon (there are even enemies, that are immune to some damage types).
I personally have fun with bullet spongy enemies on highest difficulties, because they still flinch and lose limbs from powerful enough shots, and I like hard hitting weapons, like bows. Makes fight with each enemy fun, because you need to hit weak points, dodge and learn enemies attack patterns.

That's not entirely honest. You Got Wang does give enemies more health and damage, and if you play it as your first difficulty level, your weapons will seem largely ineffective against your enemies before you get some decent upgrades. And since you don't have levels, you don't have character upgrades, meaning that the increased damage of the enemies will fuck you up really easily. Combine that with the elemental auras that are often really hard to avoid getting the debuff from and you have in your hands an experience that is pretty frustrating.

In any case, since you can switch difficulties at any time, it just makes sense to keep bumping it up from normal as you keep leveling up. At least that's what I found to be the smoothest experience.

I've finished the game three times on you got wang and no. This is very false. It's a matter of poor use of upgrades and presumably possibly also bad aim. And don't take this as bragging, because frankly I generally REALLY suck at twitch-based gameplay, yet I still never had issues with not vanquishing enemies with crazy speed on You Got Wang from the very first level on.

You don't NEED "decent upgrades" at all, actually. Even the most basic grey upgrades can boost your weapon efficiencty to riddiculous degrees: the game literally gives you EVERYTHING you'll need from the start - it's one of the reasons why it showers you with upgrades so much.

I don't think there was an enemy I could not kill under 15 seconds on You Got Wang outside of the bosses, and a few encounters mid-game that caught me off guard and unprepared.
You can kill Taro's with three shots (Hammerheads with two) with your starter pistol on You Got Wang and no upgrades, you know that? And as SOON as you get the bow (third of fourth level of the campaign), you can max-three-shot everything in the bloody game up till late midgame just by using a couple of grey level 10-15 gems. And I'm really not making this shit up.

I did like that, it was a nice change from "Just speed up the animation by 20%" and call it a day. The only thing that irked me was that I enjoy when the player actually uses the charging handle on the AR, instead of the forward assist(or whatever it's called, the little button above the mag. I'm not gonna pretend to know guns). The elite reload perk took it away which made me not use it for the most part.

I play the game on Insanity 3 at the moment and I'm doing fine, so I doubt my ability or upgrade setup is that poor.

Also, you are grossly overestimating the power of early game grey upgrades. A grey damage upgrade at level 1 is a sub 10% increase in damage. Couple that with base weapon damage and you'll be looking at a damage increase of just a few points, which is pretty much nothing in the face of You Got Wang enemies.

In any case, I'm not denying that it is quite possible to start and beat the game on You Got Wang, but it invariably means that you will have a less of an action packed initial experience due to all of the precautions you have to take against not dying.

I get that CS:GO has a shitty business model, also it's extremely popular and /v/ is full of contrarians, but these games have some of the highest (if not the highest) skill ceilings in the fps genre.
The difference between a regular player and a pro player is visibly huge. There's a reason why the competitive scene has grown to be the biggest in all esports, its not all marketing.
They also gave birth to awesome game modes like bhop and surf. I know Quake and shit did that first but the movement is way more enjoyable in the Source engine imo.

You know that is literally the same movement model, right? That's the whole reason it carries over.

Besides, it's more that it never gained much use in quake, with bhopping getting removed from the later quake games and surfing only being discovered later on.

It's for sure lower than movement based FPS games, like Quake and Tribes, but I'd personally argue it's right under them in terms of depth. Most of /v/ isn't good enough to really judge CS's depth, so trying to discuss it on here is fairly irrelevant. I have about 1000 hours into go at got LEM at my highest ranking, so I'm fairly mediocre myself

I've always liked the series and was balls goddamn deep into it during the height of Halo and CoD, and in comparison to those games it's a hell of a lot deeper.

Halo's guns are like the main reason I never enjoyed the game online. The lower tier weapons and automatics just feel completely incapable of killing at range, and the ranged weapons could dominate entire games easily. I got sick of playing Halo 2 at friends houses and having half my gun fights devolve into SMG spam into melee. I once missed my melee on a guy with no shield, took two steps back, and then had him lunge a greater distance and kill me, which was the point were Halo died in my eyes.

It's because they took the guns from HL1, made them a bit shittier, and then dumped them into a completely new game that relied a lot more on engaging human enemies at a distance. HL1 is like mostly close combat fighting with non humans, and even like half the human encounters are at a fairly close range.

HL2 would be made 100 times better if they actually gave you a reliable, decent medium range gun and more science weapons. Just cut out the SMG and the combine gun and replace them with better alterantives that actually work the the game's environments.

I wouldn't call CS tactical, but some of the smoke and flash bang placements at high level can be genuinley fucking insane. I wish I still had a link to this video that broke down this one team throwing something like 6 flashes and 4 smokes within seconds with insane accuracy to quickly take site B on inferno.

I would say CS stresses better aim though, since head hitboxes are much smaller and 90% of the time you will be aiming for them and wanting to land consistent shots near that level.

Pistol, Single shotgun, Plasma Rifle and Rocket Launcher all lack something.

Heavy Assault Rifle, Turret Chaingun and Siege Gauss are pretty great addmitedly

Super Shotgun is pretty overpowered and great against everything, but it doesn't really feel as powerful as it should be.

One thing that's important and often forgotten is the angle and perspective on how the gun is placed in first person view. Some games give you tiny hands and slenderman arms, some guns look miniscule and awkward.

It needs to look menacing, wieldy, heavy, and when you walk around you can't have retarded head bobble, even the amount of walking head bobble needs to be subtle and replicate real life so as to not distract the player and make him feel powerful and like his movements are dynamic.
