Is the Nintendo switch missing an opportunity to also become a successful VR platform? The main issue I see is the lack of a high resolution display.

> The main issue I see is the lack of a high resolution display.

Not like it even has enough power to run VR games even if it did.
>>
The joycons seem to be very futureproof when it comes to making them VR-ready. They just need a beefier machine and it's all good to go. Same OS, same controllers, just an upgraded console or dock that let's it play VR games
>>
>>376579998

Pick one, OP

no

you're as stupid as the stupidest people in history
>>
>>376580112
>>376580226
Since we know the Switch is capable of having its specs upgraded by releasing an upgraded dock I was thinking they could put the extra processing power in the headset itself. That should be enough to run Metroid Prime VR
>>

Kill Yourself.
>>
>>376579998

oxymoron
>>

I actually give Ninty a lot of credit for steering clear of the VR meme
>>
>>376580369
Ya got me buckeroo. I sure hope I didn't rustle your jimmies too hard.
>>
>>376580369
Sure, just like how 3D movies and 3D TVs were not gimmicks, right?
>>
>>376580262
I think the main issue holding VR back from main consumers is the price. If Nintendo was to make something like those phone VR things I think they could create a strong market.

Look at the Ps4 VR, buying the thing costs about as much as the machine. However if things were done well the entire package of Switch and VR thing could cost less than the Ps4 headset.
>>
>>376580589
3D movies were around for over a decade, what are you talking about?
>>
>>376580401
>Since we know the Switch is capable of having its specs upgraded by releasing an upgraded dock
No, it doesn't.
The dock just unclocks the GPU and keeps it at a good temperature.
>>
>>376579998
>VR
Kys
>>
>>376580708
Because the dock has nothing in it. If they put an APU and some RAM in there then it would, we know this from patents.
>>
After how dead the VR market became after PSVR release and all the Occulus fiasco, I can't really see this gimmick going too far, sadly. Even phone VR is barely a thing these days.

I was longing for a nicely priced machine who could let me see some kinky stuff... Maybe in the future
>>
>>376580642
I like joking about how unsuccessful vr is, but I agree with you. I do also think that in order for vr to be mainstream its going to need to be made into a all in one device so developers are all developing games and there's no market split.

psvr is at a huge disadvantage because why would anyone want to develop a vr game when only 1/10 or whatever of the PS4 userbase owns psvr.
>>
>>376579998
it would work, I've used VR with my phone that has a resolution of 1280x720 and it worked just fine, sure its not going to be the lamborghini of VR but you can still enjoy gaming.
>>
>>376580262
>>376580446
>>376580797
I think VR stuff is a joke right now because of a lack of universal standard and quality products. I do not believe VR will be a replacement for control methods.

>>376581094
This here friend. Not knowing what hardware someone will have makes developing VR a bitch I think. The high buy in price is a major turnoff. If Nintendo got like a $60 headset with a pack in Mario party type thing I think they could get something started.
>>
>>376580642
just look at the Switch, it already has motion controls and all the jazz you need to play in VR, all it's lacking are the goggles and the games. so essentially, the switch could actually be the cheapest VR machine on the market.

I actually think that the Eyes on Mario's hat in the Mario Oddysey is a sign that you are going to look through those eyes, the game is actually going to be the first game to have VR

That's why.

leave it to Nintendo to school devs on how to actually make VR games anon.

>>
>>376581510
Virtual Boy was more like a proto-type 3DS.

It even had the same method of producing 3D effects.
>>
>>376580668
Same with wagglin' motion controls. Still a gimmick
>>
>>376581674
>no games

You mean no Western AAA 3rd party games.

All the big titles we've seen released on the platform so far have seen large success and even smaller franchises are seeing a resurgence (Bomberman).
>>
>>376580815
>a device is lacking a certain powerful hardware that's why it's not powerful enough
Holy shit what a revelation! That explains why PS4 can't do 4k60fps. They can easily fix it by releasing an external GPU
>>
>>376579998
you forgot the fact that it has a fraction of the processing power of modern phones
>>
>>376581832
So what else besides bomberman?
>>
>>376582474
1-2 Switch has definitely seen more success than Nintendo Land for sure.

Best Sellers for USA Top 10 have this right now.

1. Mario Kart
2. Kamiko
3. NBA Playgrounds
4. Puyo Puyo Tetris
5. Snipper Clips
6. Shovel Knight Treasure Trove
7. Tumble Seed
8. Wonder Boy the Dragon's Trap
9. Zelda BotW
10. Has Been Heroes

That's quite a disparity between Mario Kart and Zelda, and we know Zelda is selling extremely well too, so it definitely shows that smaller retail and non-retail games can receive success on the platform.

EU is similar with even more smaller titles being above Zelda and 1-2 Switch which place at 13 and 14 respectively.

Hamster has also reported at least 200,000 sales of their Neo Geo games on the Switch eshop since launch, reporting that it is a large success.

https://mynintendonews.com/2017/05/02/neogeo-games-see-sales-success-on-the-nintendo-switch/

TL;DR version: This thing is selling all kinds of games and the only ones missing from the bunch are the big Western AAA 3rd party.

It's very interesting that Bethesda was one of the first to jump on board Switch when historically they haven't release any games on Nintendo platforms since the NES (and those were just cheap license titles).

The present and potential future is looking bright for Switch and I bet Capcom are killing themselves for only readying SFII for Switch early on.
>>
>>376580668
>3D movies were around for over a decade
3D moves have been made for decades and every time they become "popular" it's always a fad.
>>
>>376579998
>lack of a high resolution display
No
>>
How much heat would this generate of it was strapped on your face
>>
>>376583925
The screen doesn't get hot, only the back of the unit and it's not hot enough to burn your hands when playing in handheld mode.

Nintendo switch has the same resolution as an Oculus DK1.
>>
>>376583118
>1-2 Switch has definitely seen more success than Nintendo Land for sure.
which is a fucking travesty, nintendo land was fantastic
>>
>>376579998
you need far more than 30fps for a good vr experience. at least 60fps and i think the vive has 90fps minimum
>>
>>376584247
Nintendo Land is a cool game, but I felt like it was carried pretty hard by the Nintendo IPs, where as 1-2 Switch does make a good use of the Switch's gyro controls and HD rumble while not relying on Nintendo IPs to sell well.

I'm very curious to see if Nintendo can keep it up with a potential future Wario Ware or Mario Party game.

Still the games in Nintendo Land were neat and the soundtrack remixes were great.

>>376579998
im not gay
>>
>>376581589
They're already schooling the devs by not making VR shit.
