Tales of Zestiria

Don't play Zestiria as your first. It's not so bad as to be unplayable, but it's definitely a shitty game.

It's not the best in the series, but it's pretty good. Definitely better than Berseria.

It's one of the worst games in the series. Just skip it, because the prequel Berseria fixes almost everything that's wrong with it and is one of the best games in the series.

Is Xillia a decent place to start?

I enjoyed and finished many Tales games from Phantasia and up and I couldn't get through Zestiria. Maybe my tastes have just developed or it really was just pretty shitty overall. Maybe both.

Abyss is too polarizing to recommend it as a guaranteed "best". A lot of people either love it or hate it.

Vesperia is good and the last time I got a "classic Tales" vibe from a game in the franchise. Graces f has fun as fuck combat but a shitty story. Xillia's alright, but nothing special. People who recommend Symphonia are blinded by nostalgia. Not saying it's bad, just that it's overrated. Berseria was fun as fuck with an amazing story and cast.

If you can stomach mid-90's JRPG conventions then play Phantasia. If not, start with Vesperia or Berseria. You don't need to play Zesty to enjoy Berseria- you'll just miss some small continuity nods and in-jokes.
