You are a babby if you don't remember doing this
>>
Sorry, I have never been a sonyfag.
>>
First console was the PS and I never did this
>>
>>376549502
I got a PS1 the day it was released and I don't know what the fuck is going on here
>>
why is this console upside down? heat problem?
>>
>>376549713
It helped with certain disc read errors
>>
I never did this and still own my PS1 and it still works fine, whats this about?
>>
>>376549502
For what reason?
>>
Yeah I remember having to do that later in my PS1s lifespan.
>>
>>376549502
I used to put mine on its side and it worked better like that.

>>376549664
>>376549694
>>376549713
>>376549830
>>376549862
Some models had problems with their optics and putting them on the side or turning them upside-down helped a lot. Sometimes you couldn't even watch a streaming cutscene properly unless you did this.
>>
>>376549502
How in the fuck were people supposed to figure this out?

I have a feeling this wasn't a "Feature" numbnuts
>>
>>376550123
I heard it from "that kid"
>>
I had to do this for a modded PS1, since the burnt CDs weren't as thick as the PS1 discs, less disc errors
>>
>>376550123

The catch on my lid was broken

I remember this

I still know when to change the disks
>>
>>376549502
I wonder why the fuck that helped. I only needed to start doing this when my PS1 was sorta old, at least.
>>
>>376549862
>For what reason?
Because OP read the buzzfeed article "17 Things Anyone Who Owned A PS1 Will Remember"

In reality it is more of a "how to get a 20 year old console with a worn out laser to work" for young retrogamers. In college I knew about 9 hard core gamers who all owned playstations from 1996-1998 or so and I never heard of this until it became a meme.
>>
>>376550090
I didn't know that I was born in 1998 only had a 360 when I was a kid
>>
>>376549502
who here /wrapped360inblankets/ to get rid of red ring of death?
when it finally stopped working so i said fuck consoles and never went back
>>
>PS as a kid
>not a babby
wew lad
>>
>>376550415
>/wrapped360inblankets/
What the fuck? Wouldn't that produce an overheating problem even faster?
>>
I never had to do this. Mine just worked.
>>
>>376549502
> tfw too poor to ever own PS1

I remember the jealousy though.
>>
>>376550123
Word of mouth nigger. A friend of mine told me about it, which he in turn got that information apparently from an issue of PSM.
>>
>>376549502
owned a PS, never had to this.
>>
>>376550531
old 360's had fucked up solders that would cause red ring
you would wrap console in blankets and run for 20 mins to melt them and let them cool and it usually fixed for a few days

or start a fire
>>
>>376550524
I'm 30 and had a PS as a kid, so at this point I am super hyped to hear I'm still young.
>>
>>376550676
i dont think wrapping a 360 in a blanket will bring it up to 370 °F
>>
>>376550531

No, it temporarily fixed the dogshit solder points until it completely broke weeks/months later. I used a hot air gun on my shitty 360 and extended the life span 1 year until it only showed me green bars.

Literally one of the worst pieces of hardware I ever owned. I swore I won't buy any MS console ever again after that. They fixed this issue gazillion million units and 2 revisions later with the Jasper.
>>
>>376550372
>born in 1998
You still ARE a kid.
>>
Who else put their PS1 in the fridge to cool it down?

I was a naive kid
>>
>>376550123
I discovered by accident, I had a mod chip that let me play pirated games, and it came with a spring that kept the disc spinning after the tray was opened.
>>
I was nintendo boy
>>
What the fuck man, I owned an OG PS with modchip and never had to do this. I also never had any problems with cutscenes or burned games.
>>
>>376550921
To be fair, the PS3 would also crap out a lot with an yellow light or something. Consoles back then were just catching up with the problems that PC builds had.

Also, wouldn't be better to open that shit up and resolder? Not that it would be within reach of the average user, but if that were enough to fix the problem forever, it'd be cool.
>>
my ps1 wouldn't shut so i literally put a jar ontop of it for years

fucking piece of shit
>>
>>376549502
I only heard about this from the FFVI parody with vidya consoles where Terra was Playstation.

Hello fellow oldfag, how is life treating you?
>>
>>376549502
Wasn't there something where doing this would let you play pirated copies of games?
I was no thief, so I'm not sure.

No, i had a PlayStation from 1997 and i NEVER had to do this.
>>
>>376549502
bought a playstation around its launch.
never had to do this at all
>>
>tfw my DC wasn't reading discs properly
>tfw found this trick out from PS1fags
>tfw it worked on my DC
I also had a PS2 that read discs far better when standing on its side.

I need to replace the drive in my DC -- already tweaked the pot years ago when it first started troubling me, it's just failing now (tons of games have awful load issues now, only a handful of games work fine, my original GD-ROM copy of Crazy Taxi stops streaming the stage at random).
I'd get a busted DC as a donor, but the drive is more likely than not going to be the reason that DC is busted.
>>
>>376552185
I was just looking for this image. The upside down PS1 was the neatest touch.
>>
My Playstation fired a bearing from the CD spinner into it's internals and killed itself, feels fucking bad man.
>>
>>376549502
I had a modded PSX where the worm gear was going that only worked doing this. Finally died during an ice storm blackout.

My friends always laugh about how I kept that thing going for so long like that.
>>
>remembered buying bootleg PS1 disks when vacationing in Mexico
>remember putting toothpicks in the lid latch to keep the disk spinning
>remember one of the disks was a 500 in 1 type deal that had the KKK Mario hack burned onto it
The memories
>>
>>376550123
the same way cavemen learned how to make a bow and arrow
>>
>>376549502

Why the fuck would i need to do this?
>>
>>376550090
I think it was specific to the first SCPH-1002 (or something like that) version, the one where you could run pirate discs just by discswapping

fuck I miss those days
>>
>>376549502
I did that with dreamcast but never with PS1.
>>
>>376550345
my fucking NIGGA i feel so old now.

Did this for USA version of FF8 on the modded ps1, i'm from europe.
>>
>>376552793
disc reader would get fucked up from pirate CDs and eventually doing all sorts of crazy shit like toothpaste on the disc or flipping the PS1 could make the system run the discs... somehow

those fixes would never last long enough tho
>>
>>376549502

It only happened with the early models that had certain plastic parts that should never be plastic.

>>376550921
>>376551334
If I'm not mistaken a lot of the bad soldering which caused RRoD was due to MS having to switch to lead-free solder at the last minute because Europe banned it.

(Correct me if I'm wrong on this)
>>
I lucked out and never had a disc read error on the PlayStation I got back in '96. Played that thing until like 2001 or so.
>>
>>376554417
And by "it" I mean solder with lead.
>>
I was a Sega Saturn fag. You're a babby if you don't remember importing shit for it with a PAR, or doing cart swapping with games like KOF95 on it.

>>376550090
>Some models
Was it the first release or something? First run of a console is notoriously shitty and even though I have decent money now I still wait a bit to see what bugs are discovered.
>>
>>376554876
Most people don't remember because they bought a PSX or an N64

Loved the Saturn but still...
>>
>>376555284
How sad?
I had a beefy PC for the time and could emulate everything with ease.
Only console that gave problems was N64 (Project64 was kind of shit).
>>
>>376555284
Emulation back then could run that shit pretty well. FF9 was better emulated.
>>
>>376555106
Because you're young and worthless. Probably a poor poseur too.

>>
>Friend brings Crash Bandicoot over
>Eventually it's time for them to leave
>I'm about to turn the console off but they just pop the lid open, pull the disk out and walk off
>the rest of the level still plays
Blew my fucking mind.
>>
>>376550345
I used a toothpick
>>
>>376549502
The way I still get it to work is by standing it up on its left side, apparently Sony were inspired by people doing that to offset the laser being shit and were inspired for the PS2.
>>
>>376550560
Me too then I won my ps1 in a raffle
>>
>>376556814
Didn't Crash Bandicoot need to constantly stream data from CD? I think Andy Gavin wrote some blog post about it.
>>
>>376550345
I used a crumpled piece of tin foil.
