The mushroom trip sequence just hit me the hardest, really. It completely tore down my view of what teenaged Lucas was like, I thought he had learned to be the typical strong silent JRPG protagonist after his crybaby childhood years, but the hallucinations were just bursting with all kinds of guilt and insecurity.

I don't know. He suffered but he also got a great family, saved the world, see his parents go to heaven, and rule over a kimgdom. Watching your dad die and ten years as a slave are awful but he at the least had a good payoff.

Lucas watches his way of life fall, partly kills his brother, and learns he can't even save the world, there was no world left to save. I think what made him powerful is his ending isn't really happy but it gave another chance to humanity and himself.
