The quickstart guide on the df wiki is breddy gud

As long as you stick with it there will inevitably be a moment when everything just clicks and you feel like you suddenly understand the universe. That is when you've got it.
>>
>>376548716

how long did it take you? was it worth it?
>>
>>376548565
I just watched captnduck for the basics and then i just played and had wiki open. Its not that hard desu after you learn what your dorfs need and how things are built etc.
>>

not him, but the moment of clarity, understanding, and zen came after like 15 hours and about 3 forts in when I was in the middle of fighting a goblin invasion. the only "hard" part of managing your dwarves is the fucking military interface which is complete trash. The rest is acceptable if you put some slight effort into memorization. Figuring out what you want your dwarves to do isn't hard, it's knowing the keybindings and interface to tell them to do it is what holds people back from getting good.
>>
>>376548402
Watch some YouTube videos to figure out how to work the UI, that is by far the hardest part to learn.

Once you know how to build/designate just do the rest blind.
>>
>>376548402
Just jump right in.

>download/install Lazy Newb Pack
>open Quickstart Guide on the wiki
>play along with a comfy let's play tutorial, like 51ppycup's or Capnduck's

It's that easy. Game isn't even that hard. Takes maybe 2-3 forts to get the mechanics down and by then you'll have most of the hotkeys memorised.
>>
>>376550654
This except you don't even need a youtube video. I learned it without any at least.

Alot of the fun of df is failing horribly and doing better next time anyway
>>
>>376549952
This. Normies complain about the UI but the UI's fine, the only shitty part of the UI is the military screen, but by the time you're using that you'll have already mostly learnt the game.

Yea youtube tutorial/LPs are optional, but through them you learn lots of tips, workarounds, tricks etc you won't normally find out.

Here's a tip for newbros struggling with food/drink

>A lvl 1 farmer only gets 1 plump helmet when harvesting a farm plot tile
>a max lvl farmer gets 10 plump helmets when harvesting

and same goes for brewing
>lvl 1 brewer makes 1 Dwarven Wine from 1 plump helmet
>max lvl brewer makes 10 units

A common mistake newbros make is
>oh no, i'm running out of food/drink
>make 20 more farmers/cooks/brewers
>wastes ingredients making food/drink crisis worse

So just stick to 1 farmer, 1 cook, 1 brewer until their skills are maxxed, then train a 2nd of each as a backup. 1 of each & two 4x4 farm plots can supply a full fortress easily.

The ui isn't fine. It works, if you spend enough time to memorize it. There are too many inconsistencies with the operation of menus for it to be fine. I agree the military menu is by far the worst though.

I found the guide with the noob pack pretty good. I don't like that it doesn't cover all the workshops soon enough and military is not really important until mid to late game but is covered early. But it helps you learn the game really quickly and with a few mods the game is actually very easy to get into.

learning the hotkeys comes with time.

>>376551449
yea you pick up that kind of info watching LPs. it's fun seeing how other people design their forts and their thought processes behind them too.

in DF skills come in 2 types. one that enhances quality/quantity of what the dwarf produces, and skills that just make the dwarf go faster.

Off the top of my head, jobs that just make the dwarf go faster are:
>mining
>wood burning
>mechanics (when reloading traps, etc)
>engraving (when smoothing walls)
>furnace operating
>strand extracting
and so on.

Jobs that enhance quantity of goods produced:
>farming
>plant gathering
>brewing

Jobs that enhance the quality/value
>engraving (when engraving, not smoothing)
>crafts
>smithing

I know all of the hotkeys. Hotkeys aren't the problem, they generally make sense. Some menus use arrow keys to scroll, some use +/-, heck some use *&/. That is inconsistent, and throws people off.
>>
>>376551146
That's so wrong it's not even funny.

farm yield is determined at time of planting and the farmer's skill level. It generally maxes out at 5 unless fertilizer is used.

As for brewing, its 5 units of drink per plant. Skill only affects speed of production.
>>
>>376551949
military or just let them enjoy being idelers. It's not like it requires much farming to feed a fortress of 100 dwarves. there's also autlabor that comes in DFhack that you can turn on so it automatically turns on and off labors based on what you've designated to be done and skill of the dwarves.

having idlers isn't a bad thing. get them hauling shit or constructing stuff. I usually burn entire forests to run my smithing operation, so when I start up my forges I need 50-ish haulers easily just to keep everything burning.

Can draft em all into the military and put them on rotating schedules. 1 month of training, 1 month of hauling.

Just don't assign any meeting areas or taverns so they don't have parties or socialise and you're good.

>>376551994
I usually get to 150-170 dwarves before I start needing a 2nd brewer. Another tip

>Dwarves drink twice as much as they eat

iirc, they eat about 3x a season and drink about 6x a season. Always try to have twice as many drinks as you have prepared meals and you're good.

I found as opposed to games like Rim World because tasks are done so rapid it's actually not a good idea to have close to 0 idlers (which you can easily achieve with Dwarf Therapist).

It's actually better to assign dorfs to specific tasks (like one per workshop) once you get over the initial labor gap, that way you can have ample work force to respond to your orders like digging. Or just have many of them decorate your walls or train in danger room etc.

minecart story time

i can't tell you how long i played df before i started playing with minecarts. i jumped head first straight into weaponized impulse carts.

deep in my fortress i created a prototype just to see how it worked. it was a simple empty 9x9 room with ramps and tracks along all of the walls. the door leading into this room was at the north wall in the center, as was the pushoff part for the minecart.

so i get it loaded up and have a dwarf give the initial push and it works SO fucking well that the cart has already made a complete circuit and and gibbed the dwarf that gave the push. his mangled corpse, various body parts, and belongings are now scattered all over the eastern wall. the minecart still going at mach 10.

so enter about 5 more dwarves to gather his belongings and remains, and now i have 5 more corpses. i quickly forbid everything else and seal the room, but i need to stop the cart somehow so i can give these dwarves a proper burial.

for some reason i think mining away one of the corner walls so the cart will skip track is a nice safe way to do it.

it wasn't. all it did was gib one of my miners as the fucking cart comes shooting out the moment the wall was gone.

The worse thing about dwarf fortress is the game is ridiculously easy.
>Build a wall with a drawbridge and you are safe from almost anything.
>Build one medium size farm of plump helmets and you will be set for food and drink for life
>Missing something important in your biome/fort? Create a few crafts and you can trade anything you need easily.
>Give dwarfs their own room and they will probably never fall below fine stress level
>get attacked by a megaebeast early on before your fort is sealed off? Don't worry one single wooden cage trap can trap a fire breathing dragon.

To get interesting situations you have to make them yourselves by deliberately fucking up which is not the same. I unironically believe playing rimworld has ruined df for me by being a clearly better version of it.

Yea if you try-hard too much and don't make any major mistakes it really is too easy. I think the value of food should be lowered for a start, it's too easy to buy out an entire caravan with 1 barrel of *Turkey Egg Roasts*.

I try to put limitations on my defenses too. If the fort is self-sufficient it's too easy to just lock the gate and ignore a 120 gob siege. Cage traps are OP too, I've defeated Necros and their undead swarms by just trapping them all in cages and dropping it all into the magma sea.

I think a good start would be to set a goal for your fort and put restrictions on yourself to make it harder. My next fort I'm going to embark in a glacier with no soil and build my fort in the first cavern layer.

You're exactly right though. DF is either incredibly easy or balls-to-the-wall hard (in Haunted biomes etc). I'm hoping when the dwarven economy gets put back in that it'll make things a bit more interesting.
>>
>>376555478
people like to make memes about how super difficult the game is, but you are right. this is a major flaw with the game I think, after you've managed to make a self sustainable fort there is really nothing stopping you from going on forever unless you create your own fun.
don't get me wrong, there's an insane amount of things you can do, and I did play this game almost every day for like 4-5 years doing shit like these
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Stupid_dwarf_trick
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/v0.34:Megaprojects
but I've pretty much gotten bored with the game by now.

if I was toady I would work on making the game more difficult. I mean shit, just making some invaders be able to dig or break fortifications would be super simple
>>
I more or less mastered the game in 6 hours playing through while reading the quickstart guide

It's a pretty simple game in all honesty. Once you know the basics and get comfortable with shortcuts every complex piece falls into place. Also don't play with any tilesets or mods, learn the game vanilla. Don't be a shitter.

I stopped playing a while ago because the community became cancer.
Trading tales of complicated engineering bullshit with the community was one of the appeals for me, and it went away when the community became full of overly-sensitive dumbasses.

Anyway, don't use a graphical tileset. Most of them look like garbage. Learn to read the symbols. It's easier to fit information in a 16x16 box if you use a symbol than a sprite.

Bedrooms do not have to be separated by walls. everyone always does this and it leads to pathing clutter. You can designate bedrooms in open space and so long as your designations do not overlap, your dwarves are happy.
Hell, you can have them all overlap, and so long as they overlap an artifact diamond statue, dwarves will be happier than otherwise. Might be a bit ghetto having a 15x15 that's mostly beds, with a few staircases and an artifact lever. But it works, and it's compact.

Eh, best advice I can give you is at least TRY to improve, and don't let your OCD or your Autism or your Roleplaying get in the way of steadily learning and getting better.

Yeah i think i would rather have an update that makes them game feel balanced with simple fixes to sieges and the economy, than a new update with actual gameplay additions.

The thing about making your own fun is that mind set works for some people and not for others. Making my own challenges feels fake to me and you also realise the game is not balanced around some things. For example do sieges with no traps or walled defenses and you get absolutely swarmed late game.

>>
>>376557656
They won't be as happy as if you individually gave them grand rooms, but a dwarf is much happier sharing a royal than they are with their own individual modest.
Given that most people tend to make bedrooms that are 3x3 or 3x2 and stick any old bullshit in there, a shared royal is faster for pathing and your dwarves are happier.

Just be aware that any nobles you get are gonna complain endlessly that their bedroom is lower quality than the plebrooms.
>>
>>376558367
It's okay, I station all my nobles in the grand bedrooms that feature all those luxury levers and weapon traps.
>>
>>376551336
You can forego squad training if you get some cheap-but-effective defenses and set some dogs after them.

Digging a drymoat around your fort and having the only way in be a ramp to the heavens that goes across a bunch of bridges before ramping back down = bueno.

Even better is if your entryway is 2 different bridge paths, so that you can toggle which one is crossable and which one leads to gravity-assisted iron farming.

Downside is any archers are gonna have pretty clear shots at your outside guys because of drymoat + bridges. There are better defenses of course, but skybridge is relatively fast to set up.

I suppose my sin is Pride, needing somebody to brag about my l33t d0rven bull$h1t with. I guess I'm not the type of person who's happy building monuments to myself unless I can show them off.

I kinda know what you mean even though I have completely stayed away from the ultra turbo cancer that is the bay12forums and mostly kept my shitposting about df in /dfg/.

one thing I saw the other day and pissed me off more than it should is an article named something like "I felt I won Dwarf Fortress". where a guy basically said he felt like he "beat" the game because he managed to make a self sustainable fort. worst thing was the comment section was only people saying shit like "yep, that's totally a win in my book"

Was it a self-sustainable fort in Hell?

What's even the point? Your game's gonna eventually slow down to such an unplayable crawl.

Then we will invent newer and faster CPUs. And also pester Toady to add CUDA support.

>Then we will invent newer and faster CPUs
>Toady add more and more things to DF that considerably slow down the whole game instead of fixing what is causing the existing issues
>We invent even better CPUs
>Toady add even more things to DF
It's a vicious circle

He could at least node the fucking pathfinding so he doesn't need to recalculate how to get from the food stockpile to the dining room 100 times a minute.

alright so how the fuck do I get this shit to work, I wanted to try it out with a friend but I can't get DFHack to work on a fresh pack so that I can put Web Fortress into it plus some other utilities and graphics packs from scratch without anything breaking, nor can I get Web Fortress to work in the windows noob starter pack.

>generate small world (literally no impact on gameplay)
>embark small (vertical fort design is superior in every way anyways)
>literally not possible to reach fps death even if you edit the init files and raise the population cap.
you can breach every cavern and put pump stacks everywhere and you'll still be at a solid 100 fps
when will people realize this? are people retarded on purpose just to be able to complain?

what the fuck are you even talking about? just download the vanilla right off the website. it just works
>>
>>376561114
