Why does everyone like V so much? I get the story is moderately interesting, but the taming monsters and having to suit them up and get them up to speed everytime, not to mention not being able to talk with them, felt really lame to me, yet DQV is probably the favorite for most people here.

It feels so apart from the other DQ games I don't get why you wouldn't choose III or something.

The only thing I think is good about DQV's story is the premise of "you're not the hero your son is and you suffer". The story in the game itself is really poorly paced, how much time do you actually spend with Bianca before you marry her? The characters I actually liked like the prince dropped out so fast I got disinterested fast. I still beat it, but it ranks low on my personal list.

Again mostly story aspects. I get the feeling the people that limit themselves to V or say V was the only good one don't like exploring and learning on your own. There's nothing wrong with wanting to see a good story, but one of my favorite aspects about the other games was finding this stuff on my own.

As for the monster taming don't get my wrong, I love pokemon but man, if I had to not only level up any new pokemon I wanted on my team but get them new gear that I most of the time can't transfer over from the old pokemon because it doesn't fit, I'd be fuckin pissed. Plus most of the monsters are really similar, unlike pokemon.

If you like the series for the adventure feel then I think there's nothing that beats III. The overworld theme alone beats every other jrpg when it comes to the feel of adventure.

DQV's story is the best not because of the details but because of the big scope of it. It is the only game that follows you through 3 whole generations. You start as a kid, get enslaved for 10 years, as a teenager you leave and become an adult, then get turned into stone for a few more years until your grown up kids and wife come and save you to go save the world together. It's honestly beautiful in that regard and not many other games really makes you live so much throughout a character's life.

I'd say I give a damn about the protags in the other games because I put myself in that place, most of the other games immerse you in the world with information gathering and making your own decisions on what to do and where to go, and you get connected with your party members as you go through it with them, whether you make up interactions like you might in an etrian odyssey game or talking with them in IV.
I always felt like despite V losing some of what I love and believe is the strong point of the DQ games, it still gets lots of praise as one of the best, if not the best entries in the series. Always felt a bit underserved to me so I wanted to talk about it.

As a totally different side note, I know DQIV has images for its spells like the one I'm posting for III, but I can't find a good place that has all of them. Does anyone know where they are?

I'd say the only other DQ to make me care about the protag specifically was VI. The bit where you find your real self living in the real world village and you have to merge with him to save people he cares about was pretty sad for me.
